I read somewhere that they are under development and out later this year. Main likely drawback though will be cost. Saw a figure of £2000 quoted! Possibly like most things it will drop in in price after a while. If every boat in the Solent gets one just think of the chaos on the radar screens ..

My point exactly. I was in Southampton VTS yesterday and the clutter if they become popular will be a hazard in itself.
At £2000 they sound like no problem but my mobile phone was £2500 and my first GPS was £600 so price will drop with unit sales.

Should we be fitting transponders? I think not as the system will be "swamped". However, I think we should become very enthusiastic over fitting AIS receivers and I hope the prices will come down to be similar to dual channel Navtex receivers as the technology must be similar.
