Hi,

Any Forumites using a RAY AIS650 ?

If you have said kit do you see any records on 'Marine Traffic' ?

Testing with PC using the software provided suggests my unit is functioning fine, but I cannot see any tracks from trips on Marine Traffic. I've asked around the mania and other AIS users can see my vessel, so I'm confused why no MT tracks !

Hi...

MarineTraffic relies mainly on amateur land based stations to receive and upload any received information to the internet.

This means that there would need to be, for example, someone at home with an antenna at their house, permanently connected to a PC that is constantly uploading what is received and they would need to be in range of your transmissions.

There is one such receiver in Colchester at an altitude of 38m. Where exactly is your boat/transmission and does MarineTraffic show other vessels in your immediate area?

Marine Traffic seems to loose 'sight' of vessels transmitting via on board AIS above Bridgemarsh Is. on the Crouch. Vessels that appear on Marine Traffic further upstream arte using a mobile app.

I was on the river below Burnham yesterday with AIS on, but MT did not show the boat, hence this post.

I have had a number of issues with ASI650's and was interested in other users experiences !

To be honest, I can't see any other vessels (as received via AIS) above Bridgemarsh Island on MarineTraffic so you are perhaps not the only one to not show up.

As it happens, the two ships, Manuela E and Argos are currently being picked up via a couple of receiving antennas in Kent at Tolsford South and at Dartford.

Being Class A transmissions they will be transmitting both at a higher power and probably with higher transmission antennas than you.

I would not expect to find anything unusual about your Raymarine AIS650 transmissions.

If you are close to the area above Bridgemarsh Island then perhaps you could install an Rx Antenna and forward AIS information to MarineTraffic... That might help all other vessels upstream of the Island..

Out if interest - How high is your Tx antenna, and did you take a note of your RSSI, Forward Power and Reverse Power readings from the AIS when you had the PC connected?

We have an AIS650 and it works pretty much fine. With a standard whip antenna at 3m above water level, we tend to get picked up by the big boys pretty far away.

MarineTraffic has been hit and miss, depending on where they have antennas positioned. They didn't pick us up at all between Palermo and Corfu town. As we use it for friends/family to keep tabs on us via our blog, we now also have a Raspberry Pi sending our position directly to MarineTraffic via the interwebs.
