AIS Text messages?

On Sunday in the East Solent, we seemed to be plagued by "AIS Texts" on our Raymarine Plotter/AIS250.

Stupid messages like "great watch" or "hello" all of which had to be cancelled to remove them from the screen. What is the point of these and can I switch the damn things off?

(I can not see any reference in the manuals)

They are meant to be used for "Safety Related" messages, not Twittering. You should be able to determine the source; so give them a warning, and if they don't stop, report them to the CG.

So next weekend we can all expect "You can claim up to £3000 for your recent accident call 08xxxxxxxx" every 10 mins
