When I pull-up the boat details on AIS targets on my Furuno MFD, I sometimes find that no boat name has been entered. I checked other AIS targets when out on my friend's boat over the weekend, and found the same on his Simrad plotter.

I thought that a boat name was required to be input when setting-up an AIS system.......is this correct, or is there another reason we are not 'seeing' the boat name on a target?

Happens on mine sometimes, if its the first time you have highlighted the target its just gives the MMSI - but once the interval between signals is over the name appears. Must be some sport of delay until the ships AIS resends its signal.

Dynamic data (position, speed, rate of turn, etc) is transmitted every few seconds (exactly how many depends on a few factors). Static data is transmitted every six minutes. If you've only picked up a few dynamic messages and not yet encountered a static one, the ship will show up as just an MMSI. If you're at long range, have a dodgy aerial, or one of the crappy single-frequency receivers that swap between channels instead of monitoring both at once, you may be unlucky enough to miss a static message or two even if they've been broadcast, so your target could remain unidentified for quite a long time.
