AIS signals not being received - antenna issues?

Any solution to this yet?

SH agree that there's probably something wrong with the unit rather than antenna (the VHF side receives and transmits properly), and that if there are AIS signals being transmitted in the vicinity then the unit should automatically display the targets.

But I haven't been down to the boat since I first posted, so haven't been able to get the unit back to SH for their engineers to check it. If it is faulty, then they'll correct it or replace the unit under the 3yr warranty. (I actually bought it two years ago, but only got round to fitting this season.)

Will report back once the fault is diagnosed.

Ais will only be displayed if a gps signal is present. You dont need a high speed nmea output / input for gps nmea 0183. I am unfamiliar with this radio but my money would be on it not getting the right gps data.

Does it require a dedicated gps aerial? My ais transmitter does.

GPS signal present and correct (from the new SH CP300 chart-plotter).

It does sound like it is faulty. I just fitted a Gx2100 at the weekend and as soon as the GPS info started coming in OK (obvious as it displays on the screen) I was able to see the AIS info. Press the AIS button, then any soft key, then 'list' and the AIS targets should show up. It seemed to get the MMSI number of each straight away, but it took a few minutes for the names to start appearing in the list.

I didn't think of trying to listen for clicks on the AIS channels - I don't even know if the channels are available when switching channel.

UPDATE FROM STANDARD HORIZON:

The unit was indeed faulty, in that the AIS connector from the control board had become unseated. This would have happened at some time after the unit had been given a final test before packing, but before I purchased it, probably in transit from Japan to the UK. Expecting the repaired unit back by courier tomorrow.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions.

Great... Well done for letting us know..

With the new VHF and the wiring now in place, the chart plotter should just show the AIS targets when powered up.

Have fun and enjoy the new AIS :)
