AIS: sensible values for CPA, TCPA

Thank you everyone, really helpful reminders, especially srm's comments about the manouvering constraints of big ships. I shall continue to do my best to scuttle out of everyone's way ......

When you need it you’ve not got it. When you’ve bought it your probably not use it. Still best to have it. Come the day your need.

Pleased to be of help.

Early in my career I was on a rig supply ship crossing the straights of Hormuz with a small drilling rig in tow. We had to cross a line of supertankers in ballast entering the Gulf and our captain misjudged. I will not forget the sight of a supertanker with engine full astern trying to avoid us. Prop wash cancelled out the rudder effect and it slewed off course narrowly missing us and our tow. Once past us it resumed course and rejoined the line of tankers having slightly reduced speed and moved back one place.
