AIS for dummies

UK Distributor for Onwa

Thanks- I hadn't realised that Onwa and Masutec were basically the same units, and prices.
From a bit more digging I'm seeing that you can get an Em-Trak unit for another £60, which adds NMEA2000.
I'll have to see what works best with what I've got available to connect my AIS up to- choices are my existing elderly Lowrance plotter, a spare Garmin plotter I have, or my laptop running OpenCPN.

Sometimes fishing boats turn their Tx off not to give away a rich ground but they might still receive = need a transceiver
You really think they'll be looking at their AIS? Half the time they don't even seem to be looking where they're going

(no argument about a transceiver, seems daft not to now. Just turn the bloody thing off in the marina!)

No idea, maybe they do set an alarm? Otherwise no point buying/installing the kit, below 300tons they don't have to. Anyway, I'd never cast off without radar at night, not to mention fog.
