Exactly this is the whole point! An AIS onboard is there to display in the receiver module of another vessel close enough to need to consider you a danger... it does have to or needto be monitored on a web based app. Mine uses a splitter and is not the best signal but i know it shows up on vessels about five miles away depending on their vhf height.
As long as it irggers somenoes alarm half a mile away on a foggy day and alerts them to me i am happy.
TBH the last thing i need sometimes is people knowing exactly where i am and guessing the pub im anchored off or visiting...
