SI-TEX SAS-300 AIS Class B Transceiver - Display Only f/Use w/Existing AIS - so £380 for a 6.5inch plotter or

SI-TEX SAS-300 AIS Class B AIS Transceiver w/Internal GPS Antenna at £763 with internal AIS.

Still not cheap, and I guess not CE marked, but may help push prices a bit....

I guess not CE marked,

I wouldn't assume that - Si-Tex are a perfectly respectable US company, albeit small-time compared to Raymarine, Navico or Garmin. They used to do cheap low-end radars that plugged into Standard Horizon's now-discontinued plotter range.

As they didn't list a European agent I took a punt - it wasn't a judgement on their respectability - my apologies to anybody my comments may have mislead.

No it isn't. It's an AIS tranceiver which can show targets on a C-Map chart. It's not a plotter.

The one shown in post #1 isn't even that, it's the display only. The full kit will set you back about £800 plus shipping, plus import duty, plus VAT and plus collection fees. Over a grand. Better to buy something like the Vesper XB-8000 with wi-fi.

Edit: Don't forget to add £200 for the C-Map charts. Total = £1200

Vesper XB-8000, laptop, OpenCPN, VMH charts = about £700 excluding the laptop cost.

Another eBay bargain! :D

Or look at Matsutec HP-6/8/1228A

This is a chart plotter with Class B AIS transceiver. Had the HP-628A on my boat since last April, and am now thinking of upgrading the 828 or 1228A.

Unlike a laptop, this is reasonably goffer (heavy seawater splash) proof.

Costs Plotter HP-628A ~ £375 ($476 last Spring), although a bit more now since the £ has dropped against the $; Chart CMAP Max for South Coast £114; dedicated VHF Aerial £50

On a historical note about 8 years ago Digital Yacht marketed the first combined plotter/AIS receiver:

http://digitalyacht.co.uk/files/SmarterChart500.pdf

On the face of it a great idea, you could mount it on a small boat/Rib/Whatever, in the open, and just put a stubby aerial on top, if you did not require anything up a mast.

It only sold moderately which was a shame. I think they could have had a transceiver out smartish if it had done better, a chance missed and gone now.
The small boat owner will find the idea very handy, if prices drift down, but established manufacturers seem to have bigger fish to fry.
