We have a SH300, about 7 years old and always faultless. Now though in busy areas ie lots of ais transmitters the cursor is leaving a long trail which takes some time to go, also a kind of horizontal banding appears on the screen. It's not terminal yet but I wondered if the processor is getting overloaded or if its just time taking its toll

Now you tell me! We've a SH CP300, about 7 years old (and always faultless), and we've just been and gone and bought a AIS received to plug into it.

If it is getting overloaded, I wonder whether adjusting the alarms to the minumum setting you're comfortable with might make any difference.

Where is your AIS aerial? We've bought a puny one (aka discreet and handy) for mounting on the pushpit, and it says it has a range of 10 miles. I've seen others on here boasting their AIS (presumably with masthead aerial) picks up signalas from 80 miles away. All very well, but personally I'm not intersted in vessels that far away, and that would involve an astonishing amount of info to process.

Small aerial doesn't really matter i think. Set ais radius on the cp anyway so can reduce overload that way. Our aerial on the pushpit has been fine. Have you bought a receiver of a transponder?

Receiver - little Digital Yacht combined aerial and receiver.

I was talking to Standard Horizon the other day (very helpful, friendly, efficient people), and it turns out that the CP300 has been built with various processors inside over time. It affects which firmware updates apply, and apparently the plotter we have (2007 vintage) won't be getting any more updates after the current one. (Doesn't bother me unduly, I've only today updated it for the first time. Was never aware of any bugs, but I'm told the update has a few more gizmos (e.g. split screen display) and enhanced AIS capability. (Someone on this forum said the old firmware didn't handle receive Class B AIS.)

I have a SH180 with a transponder, shows a huge amount of targets both a and b. B range normally about ten miles, A range up to about fifty miles, currently near to Le Havre and see a mix of A and B, l have had this set-up for about seven years without problem., I don't normally turn on the alarm unless visibility is poor.

Same here.
Last year I put a vhf antenna at the top of my mizzen and use that for ais, I get 50 odd miles on it. Previously I used a length of split coax strung round the aft cabin and got about five or six miles, which was adequate.

I updated my CP180 to the final revision last week, and I got an input port back.

What are the version details of the final revision for the 180 mate? I want to check if mine is up to date :)

Ah... I think it's V.16.01.00 (found it online)
