AIS and chartplotter compatibility

I have a Northstar 550i chartplotter. It is virtually identical to the Navman 5505i
(See http://www.navman.com and go to Navman marine at bottom of page for manual)

The manufacturers state that it is incompatible with AIS but I wonder if there is a way of tweaking the plotter it to make it compatible.

Afraid it won't do AIS, but the Northstar 557 will (and it's got a much better screen). Why not sell the 550 on eBay?
