Aplogies for posting something NB yet again, but past experience has proved there are quite a few knowledgable pilots (their names escape me) on this forum.

I just wanted some more info regarding a news story I heard this morning on ITV. I was dashing out the door at the time so only caught some of it but it seemed to show a light aircraft deploying a parachute from the tailplane. The commentary stated that the pilot, an american, had set a new world record using the parachute after part of his wing had broken off.

What was the world record and is this a standard add-on for private aircraft, I have never seen or heard of it before?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Yes it is available on certain types of light aircraft - I've seen videos of it in action - don't know where. Perhaps the World Record was because he was the first to use it "in anger" though "in terror" may have been more appropriate/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

http://brsparachutes.com/ gives you access to loads of gen about this, although my personal opinion is that these systems do not stand up to proper scrutiny from a classical risk assessment point of view...

Rather than posting NB stuff here, in the hope of finding some of the many aviators who use this forum, why not visit www.pprune.org which is the Professional Pilots Rumour NEtwork, for years the web's busiest portal for aviators of all persuasions. Steer clear of the Jet Blast forum, though, unless you have a strong constitution.

My view would would be of this device is that if you are so concerned about a wing failure that you go and buy one of these then in fact you should change your aircraft!!!!! If you have an engine failure I would much rather go for powerless landing than pull the rip cord, you never know where you might end up, so get a better/newer aircraft or a twin.
