Aircraft Noise: Ocean village/ Marina bay in Gib?

We enjoy a couple of weeks in Marina Bay most years and find aircraft noise is "tuned out" after a while, very little impact as long as the RAF Tornados aren't visiting. This year the place was very noisy with a pile driver working until 10pm, preparing a berth for a floating hotel in Ocean Village. LaLinea marina is a bit remote with a fair walk into town but food prices were cheaper in Spain than Gib so we walk or bus across from Gib or, use the dinghy into LaLinea sailing club (5 euro charge) when on the anchorage there. Shop prices in Gib, except for cigs and booze, are a rip-off and Sheppard's chandlery charge eye watering prices.

Ocean Village is busy, lots of bars and restaurants etc and a very popular choice because of that. Queensway is at the other end of town, not as many people milling about but certainly not dead and a few pretty good restaurants.

Either marina sees you in the town centre within a few minutes, just from different ends of Main Street - it's a small rock so not like anywhere could be considered dead.

am I right in saying that if you go by sea from La linea marina to Ocean village in a dinghy, you would have to clear customs each time?

so it's walking then, or on a folding bike.
Seems to be massive queues for cars, with all the cigarette smuggling.
 
The alongside berths, indeed all those in the bit going up to the north west from the words Ocean Village Marina, are not currently available due to work for a new floating hotel.
Strongly suggest you contact them for a booking if you want to long stay over winter.
There are only three or four return flights a day, mostly mid day, and not a problem.

thanks for that info.

I am shipping my boat, so i will probably launch it in La linea, then across to Gib to have a look-see.I like busy places, so Ocean village sounds perfect.
I haven't sorted out the logistics yet.
 
La Linea is all finger pontoons, which is handy. The showers and laundry facilities are excellent, but wifi is not free. The Gib border is a 10 minute walk away, and just over there is an Eroski (Spanish) supermarket that sells Waitrose stuff and booze at duty free prices.
 
Just make sure you have some very good springs on your mooring lines and you are well off the side..a lot of people seem to attach tyres to their mooring lines to take out some of the swell.

It makes sense to start in La Linea first as it's so cheap, have a mosy around Gib, and if I like it then arrange a mooring.

Seems like a very attractive base to explore the west med from, duty free, English speaking, cheap flights.
Thanks for all the advise, I will probably head west to Portugal for April, Tavira and the Ria Formosa.

There have never been more than a few alongside moorings. Long term berthing for a boat your size will be bow or stern to on pier 2 or 3.

Pile driving work has finished. There is still some disruption from construction works to support the new floating hotel but the end is in sight.

There is no more swell in Marina Bay than any other marina in bad weather.

Gib is not suited to everyone, seems fair. Each to their own.

La Linea would be a good place to have your boat delivered, the Yard travel hoist is tops.

The planes in both places are not intrusive and get an audience!

IMO and experience GIb is a dump. Tatty/Old/Tired/stuck in the past/Dirty/Expensive. La Linea is much better (and cheaper). If you want the UK and tat then cross the border into Gib.
