Hi All,
i was considering mooring in Gib for the winter period. looking at Google earth, Ocean village marina and marina bay seem to be very very close to the runway.

How much noise is there?

Would you recommend the other marinas in Gib in preference ?

We were the other side in La Linea last year which is nearly as close. We had no problem with the noise and actually enjoyed watching the planes take off and land. Sometimes they got it wrong and had to go round several times.
There are not many flights a day..3 or 4 and none at night.. You are liable to get more noise from the Man United fans in the local bar watching the matches!

I was worried because on my mooring here on the Shannon, they've just based a ambulance helicopter across the road in the army barricks. they try to make different approaches to the landing pad, but when they go overhead all the windows on the boat shake and vibrate with the low frequency rotor noise.....scary. can't hear the telly!

A few flights a day is no problem. wht happens in the summer?

are the mooring fees in la linea much cheaper?
do you walk across the border, spend much time in Gib?

We were only there over winter so I cannot answer most of your questions.
I suggest you pm captain sensible of these forums who has lived in the marina there for sometime.

I could almost spit on the runway when I was there. Planes stop at night, no real issues with noise.

It's a dump though, full of ex-pat brits who treat the Spanish with contempt.

i saw the series of programs about Gib, 'Britain in the sun'. looked a bit bucket and spade, but maybe that was hype for the cameras.

i was considering Gib because the locals are not ex-pats, but Gibraltarians who happen to speak English?

As part of a 2010-11 migration of our boat to the Med (where she remains), we thought of Gibraltar as a place to stay for a time. Having visited for a few days in April 2011 while passing through, we were glad that we had not committed to spend more time there. Like all enclaves, Gibraltar has its fascinations, but like all enclaves it is ultimately a weird and unreal place, and fundamentally not overly appealing -- great for a visit, unmissable actually, but less so for a longer stay. At the risk of giving offence, I would not rate the Gibraltarians as locals, but rather as Enclavians -- best sampled in small doses. As for your original question, I agree with the other posters -- the flights were fun to watch, and there was no noticeable disturbance from the noise -- not an issue.

If you are heading eastward into the Med, keep going (recommendation: Cartagena), or if going westward also keep going (recommendation: Lagos).

Two consecutive winters at Marina Bay, aircraft noise level is not intrusive and if you pop back to the UK at anytime having the airport a stones throw away can only be a benefit. Few weeks at Queensway Marina, a few nice restaurants and quieter than Marina Bay - prefer MB, brilliant gym just around the corner.
Made some good friends with Gibraltarians and foreigners alike.
Border queues can be an issue if driving, if aircraft landing you may have to wait 15 mins or so to cross the runway.
Really enjoyed our time there.

Marmite seems appropriate!

there seem to be some alongside side-on moorings....where's the best spot....7-8mtrs (cough, cough)

We stayed at Queensway for 10 days in the summer period, very quiet. At that time it was very slightly cheaper than Marina Bay but may be different now. We enjoyed Gib but do not know if we would want to spend the whole winter there.

Lived in MB for nearly two years. I was working on the whole redevelopment thing. We left there once it was completed so I can't comment on 'modern' ie post redevelopment, services. The only time aircraft noise was an issue was when they deployed a squadron of Tornadoes there for an exercise! On their last day the 'boys' decided that full out (sub-sonic passes along the runway were in order. Boy! Did that rattle the rigging! Great fun though. If the current disagreement over GIb continues maybe they'll be back.....

Thoroughly recommend a winter there. I'd be happy to go back.

Chas

i understand exactly what you're saying when you say 'very quiet', dead as a dodo.
I don't like that either

Yes, we were also in Marina Bay for 18 months. No problem with aircraft noise but swell, when the weather's from the wrong direction, can be unsettling. Like Chas, we enjoyed Gib - but it is an acquired taste.

please excuse my direct manner. Generally speaking the population: working class, middle or well educated?

The alongside is alongside a concrete wall. In my opinion concrete walls and swell don't mix very well but Samantha Tabbs was tied there next to the wall and they seem to cope aright. I don't think you will get much choice in where you want to go.

Depends if it is day or night?
The population is far greater during the day when all the workers come in.
During the day as well a huge amount of the population are tourist Brits so you can probably answer that best yourself...

If you decide to go to Gibraltar then probably the best thing would be to spend a couple of days in each marina, you easily walk from one to the other in 15 minutes or so. Perhaps a couple of days in the La Linea one as well?

Ocean Village is busy, lots of bars and restaurants etc and a very popular choice because of that. Queensway is at the other end of town, not as many people milling about but certainly not dead and a few pretty good restaurants.

Either marina sees you in the town centre within a few minutes, just from different ends of Main Street - it's a small rock so not like anywhere could be considered dead.
