Aircraft Carriers stability

I own up in advance to an element of thread drifting, but if Scottish independence goes ahead what happens to things like carriers, Trident subs and the rest of the navy? Does Scotland get a proportion of the vessels or their monetary value?

Returning to the OP's question, the correct answer is that a small piece of Gordon Brown's ego is built into the port side, on the deck edge, opposite the island. Apparently it's the densest substance known to man.

There is also a rumour that toe-straps will be fitted to port, so that the off-duty crew can hike out.

Unfortunately Gordon Brown didn't bother balancing anything when he made the decision to award those contracts.

I thoroughly support the Armed Forces as a former soldier, I thoroughly support the RN as a keen sailor, and I thoroughly support the FAA as a professional pilot - but those carriers are not the best way to spend our limited defence budget for the future threats that we may face.

What then is the best way to spend our money if not Carriers?

My Understanding was that the contract with BAE was that it was more expensive to cancel them than to build.

Yep, blame Gordon Broon for getting the civil service to lock us into an unbreakable contract.

As for a better way to spend OUR money, I don't have time to type out a full list, but for starters, what about building more 'social' or 'affordable' housing?

Great idea - an aircraft carrier is perhaps quite a good host for social housing! If my local economy is a benchmark, many of the work-shy migrate to the seaside anyway so why not anchor the new carriers in the Solent? For that matter, why didn't they convert the Ark Royal into a floating estate too - a bookie, few pubs, McDonalds and an Argos and it's sorted.

I was thinking more bricks'n'mortar or whatever it is they use nowadays. With over two million families (the majority of them earning) looking for affordable homes and local authorities spending a fortune on B&B for people on their waiting lists, it's a bit of a non-brainer, especially when you consider that people with their own homes spend money of furniture, fittings, flat screen tellies, asbo dogs, curtains, carpets, white goods, Dulux, etc which would help kick life back into the retail sector.

BTW, I think most town planners' and architects' thinking has progressed beyond the 1960's-housing-estate stage.

Thus speaks a lad brought up in a council pre-fab.

Ah understood. I thought you were referring to the 'no-exit' contract and the off-the-wall prospect of launching as the 'HMS Jeremy Kyle' - thus freeing up housing for those that work and need to be ashore to commute...

Indeed and about time. And +1 - except ours was quite well built block & rendered. Still cold damp and moldy, but better than nowt!

This is venturing into Lounge territory, but basically if independence is voted for there will be a negotiation. The Scottish Defence Force will need assets, so would probably be interested in taking over some boats where these are suitable. Obviously some larger assets like carriers are indivisible, and there are some, such as Trident subs which the parties promoting independence have made quite clear they want nothing to do with. Fortunately everything can be assigned a monitory value, so there is no need to cut anything up. It is the current position that the same %age should be used when assessing what share of the UK's assets falls due to Scotland as applies to Scotland's assumption of its share of the national debt. So far, so simple, but the devil's in the detail and if it happens there will be plenty work for lawyers.

For all we know the various sections of Carrier1 haven't been joined up yet - so that some of it might remain in Scotland and the rest will be transferred to RumpUK!
More seriously, may I join you in the Lounge?
The time for the negotiations about this and a whole lot of other things is surely nigh? Not after the referendum...
When I cast my vote next September, I want to know the answers! "We haven't thought about it", "We don't know" and "Scotland won't become Independent so we haven't bothered to discuss it" are all completely unacceptable responses.
The lack of information is astonishing.

Early SSNs could plane on the surface. Was called going on the 'step'. By venting the aft ballast tanks, selecting big revs and doing a bit of a wiggle, the submarine would effectively get on its own bow wave and crank along at impressive speed.

It was somewhat interesting inside....

Avalook at 1 minute and a few seconds:

Hope this is of interest.

A far as I remember that was only Do'nut, Valiant tried a lot but never made it and Warspite didnt really bother, there were other more interesting bits of the envelope to explore
