Can anyone tell me why in this age of green environmentally friendly culture to replace the air filter on a volvo(Perkins) diesel you need a complete plastic box unit ? Seems a massive waste to simply fit a new paper filter ?

Completely agree. It's ridiculous. I'm going to change to a K&N washable filter shortly, but my only concern is whether the plastic box provides sound insulation.

I'm sure I followed a thread on non Volvo replacement air filters just recently? Maybe something here?

Here we go! The thread I was referring to was obviously back in April.

Thanks all based on this although just had the new plastic box type installed it might be a few years before it’s replaced but just curious as it seemed to have to replace the complete plastic box right at back of engine didn’t seem that well designed as well as being wasteful when it’s just the hidden unseen paper element which might need replacement

I don't know every installation but most I see (of Volvo marine diesels) are in enclosed spaces where the need for any filter, at all, seems unnecessary.

Maybe some experts can correct my cynicism.

Suggest you cut the old one open and maybe the one you have just bought will be the last you will ever buy!

Agree with Neeves. In a modern yacht engine compartment air filtration is really not necessary, but the plastic box does reduce intake noise and it will do that whether you change or not.

Remember that Volvo marinise a Perkins engine. The base engines are excellent. Volvo choose to add an expensive filter arrangement. My Perkins Sabre is an in house marinisation. The filter unit is a Donaldson off the shelf system. Paper filters.
