I was about to change the air filter on my Volvo Penta D1-13 engine, when I discovered the filter isn't changable but the whole assembly has to be replaced at a cost of over £50, every two years!.

Has anyone experience of this 'filter' type and whether there is an alternative route eg disassembly, cleaning.

Thanks, in advance, for any knowledge.

I really don't believe that there's so much dirt in a boat's engine bay that the filter needs replacing every 2 years. The Volvo Penta schedule actually says "500 hours or 2 years", so I reckon you can accept the 500 hours as a realistic guideline (assuming you don't motor 250 hours a year!).

I have a Volvo 2003T, and the operator's manual says to replace the air filter every 2 years. I've done it once in the last 12 years, and the old one didn't look to be in a terminal state of decline.

I don't recall either my old Volvo MD11C, it's replacement Nanni 3.75 or my current VP2002 [21 years old] having any air filtering element - simply a housing which provides some silencing of the inlet noise. I raised this matter once with a marine engineer who said that this was normal as you wouldn't expect any dust etc. to get get into the engine compartment in a marine environment. Certainly none of those engines seemed to have suffered.
