Air filter directly onto turbo intake...is it possible

Hi all

Looking at doing away with the Volvo twin panel air filter box arrangement.

Hoping to get a big round k and n style filter to improve air intake and generally smarten things up but is it a good idea?

There are a few universal clamp on style so could I clamp this directly to the turbo intake? I was thinking it might be too hot but then it's just a short rubber hose between the air filter box and turbo now.

The lip on the new filter is one inch so should give me a good amount for the jubilee to hold onto.

Am I being stupid? Engines are Tamd61a's.

This sort of thing

Hi,
If its this lip then mine does not get hot it is on the compressor side of the turbo so lots of air flowing past it.

Cheers, Colin.

Colin, don't suppose you know the diameter of the intake lip do you?

I think it's 107mm looking at exploded diagrams online but I'm not sure

wont the intake noise increase substantially with a K&N style filter?

I know with cars, if you replace the air box with something like a K&N, the intake noise increases substantially.

You may find it becomes unbearably noisy.....

Good thought. I have no exhuast silencing so to be honest, I can't hear much when running full chat anyway :)

The soundproofing inside is suprisingly good but thanks for the comment. If I have to put everything back again it's no issue

MAN have a tendency to direct bolt air filters onto the turbo -- if they are tight -real tight ,then turbo whistle is not too bad , in fact it's none existent
However ,it's a tale of two sides --I gave discovered ---
Prob is they -the strap works loose gradually and then ,then only you hear a whine /whistle .
If you hear this when cold invariably you can rotate the filter -it's loosens somehow .
If its really loose ( not checked ) then you will find it n the bilge after a choppy ride --don,t ask me how I know that :ambivalence:

But what problem are trying to solve moving away from a secure /clipped air box ?

Hi,
I have got 41b's and there is not a lot of room between the air filter and the engine breather filter in fact they touch.
Seems a bit stupid having them so close.
One day I am going to see if its possible to divert the actual air cleaner away just a bit.

Cheers, Col.

It worked for me on my TAMD60Cs. The inlet on the K&N is slightly offset so I rotated it until it rested neatly on the original can filter support bracket and used a large jubilee clip pulled up gently to assist the securing provided by the clamp onto the turbo inlet stub.

I also used 3in1 spray oil as it is loads cheaper than K&N version of what is virtually the same thing, but don't use WD40 because the solvent evaporates leaving not much behind.

The K&N selector tool works well, but I likely still have the record for the K&N I used and I expect your TAMD61s will use the same one. Cost ~ £38 each in 2013.

These guys flog a reusable -oil based filters .
Had a bit of a think re end up over time in theory works out less £ /€ ,OK -but and it's a big BUT -- if you do not clean /process the mesh correctly ,then theres the potential of starving air and if the eltrotwackery cannot detect this -= overfuelling leading to a tenancy to excess EGT --which at the end of a season with fouling is going to eat into your safe -overload - headroom -- so potentially you are killing your marine diesels quietly and slowly .

And --respect the OEM

Hi Trevor. I was going to go with rd1460 with has an internal diameter at the collar of 102mm

Have a look at this diagram

https://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-explodedview-7746650-25-520.aspx

I think the diameter is 107mm. Would that be external diameter of the pipe I wonder. Might just need to measure but I'm keen to hit the order button and won't be back at the boat for a week. I a bit busy over here at the mo!!

Portofino, thanks for the link. I don't have any electronics :):) take your point though

Being something of a kleptomaniac when it comes to redundant boat parts I still have the rubber adaptor that reduced the Baldwin filter can down from ~107 to 70mm in my workshop. My TAMD60C turbo stubs were definitely 70mm OD as I have just been out in the rain to my workshop to measure the adaptor.

Also item 12 of the exploded view you linked to is a 70mm pipe clamp.

Your a good chap :):)

I think there are 2 options on the pipe. Mine is straight which appears to be 107 each end. It's definitely not got a bend angle in it. I will double check soon as.

I have just found some before and after photos. Let me upload the to photobucket and I will list them on here for you.

The original Baldwin mounted to the turbo (slightly different to your arrangement)

Nice job. Mine looks nothing like that :):):)

Never seen a can air filter like that. Does the air go in the top end of the Volvo one?
