Hi,

I've got an old Tomos 4.5 Ailsa Craig outboard, the motor runs well, but the prop doesn't seem to be turning, it spins a bit, but I think this is just the exhaust moving it round.

Any tips for dealing with these old tanks? Yugoslavian engineering seems to be pretty hardcore, really want to get this outboard going properly!

Cheers!

Propeller drive pin, aka shear pin, sheared ?

Also you do have the clutch engaged? Apart from that and the shearpin, something must be broken.

I had one in the 1970s (actually two as someone dropped the first one overboard about a fortnight after I bought it). At the time it was not a bad engine.

I don't know anything about that engine, but years ago, a Seagull suddenly decided not to drive at a critical time. The "square" on the square drive shaft had worn so much that it didn't drive the gears. Hopefully yours is one of the simpler previous suggestions.

Thanks for the replies and some suggestions. Unfortunately it's not the shear pin (I'm not that lucky!), after ripping it all apart, I think it's where the drive shaft (?) meets the crank, looks like the metal banding joining the two has broken.

Can't seem to upload an image onto here to illustrate what I mean!

I'm hoping there's a bodge fix I can do to get it working, finding parts for this engine is not easy or cheap!
