There are various thing on the market to help you berth up.

The ones I find work are,

put an attractive lady/ guy on the bow holding a rope and people always appear to help even if the place seemed deserted before you approached the berth.

This is a fact, I have seen if often and have heard people in that category complain, they wanted to practise but did not want to seem rude by not letting them take the line.

put loads of fenders out, one every 2 feet around the boat should do, then everyone appears off boats close to where you are going to help, self preservation of their boat is normally the motivation.

use loads of bow thruster and shout a little normally something like, "get the ropes on fast or we crash".

see above for reasons why!

Call the marina office and say help, then watch the marina staff run down the pontoon and so does everyone else to be nosey, do make sure you use a lot of revving, out of gear best or shoot forwards a few feet in safe water or backward and this will hasten help.

can you add any more.?

on channel 16...

"I've put the waypoint for my berth into the autopilot, but the plotter shows it's on the other side of Pontoon X. What would you advise me to do ? Over."

you know that bright red pillow case which had some water spilled on it earlier ?

The best time to dry it is as you approach the marina gate. It is traditional as you do so to station the crew right on the foredeck, dressed in LJs, and carrying fire extinguishers.

A greater need

A few years ago we were approaching a marina pontoon, with a strong cross wind off the berth. The Old Guvnor was poised on the toerail, line in hand, ready to step ashore.

As we got near, a man suddenly jumped off a nearby boat and walked quickly and purposefully towards us.

"You can stay on board." says I to the Old Guvnor, "Here's someone coming to take our lines" .

The man continued his quick and purposeful walk towards the marina heads as we drifted away.
