Ahhhhh blooming Honda outboard won't start :(

water

Indoors upright in an engine shed with most of the others, but I do keep the fuel in the tender.
I have cleaned out the carb, filtered the fuel in the cans and within 3 weeks found the carb gummed up with water and corrosion products.

I'm planning to epoxy the carb bowl and fit a fuel filter if I can find one to fit.

I wonder if the water is getting into the fuel while it is in the dinghy

old fuel can?

it is really odd

in particular there are four m6 * 100 bolts that hold the clutch housing to the powerhead.
they have 10mm heads, but I had to hammer a 7mm socket on them to free them, so corroded was the head.
any further corrosion and they would not have come undone at all, so I replaced them with stainless.

I was happy with all 6 of my Honda bikes, this has really damaged their brand in my perception.

A colleague keeps his outboard on the sternrail 24/7 and has no issues with fuel, so why do I get it in my plastic cans in th tender.

Its so unfair! (cries, exit stage left)

Because the cans are not opaque and sunlight is what does for fuel. If Nigel still posted here he would tell you all about it. Use metal cans or keep them in the dark.

thanks for that, I'll try to keep them in the shade. see if that helps.

I had the same problem with my 2hp Honda when I bought it. As it was a non runner it was very cheap. I removed the carb gave it a good clean with carb cleaner and it worked fine after that. I have been told that modern petrol can coat the carb and cause these problems. Now whenever possible I switch off the fuel and leave the engine running to drain the carb so the fuel doesn't sit in the carb and float chamber. So far this has kept the engine running fine.
