Ahh, the Crouch is lovely!

Watch the videos, they're enchanting

Dylan, keep the comments, this is a personal journey and your commentary is as important as the visuals

SWMBO and I laughed at the mobo bit, it was but a tiny fraction out of hours of video: yes, we too have had erks on jet-ski's and small boats whizzing around us on a mooring or on a light wind drifter and they are twats and pillocks: no, I don't see this as a generalisation of all mobo owners, most of whom are fine considerate people and furthermore we even know quite a few!

Contrast with the kite-surfers at Brightlingsea - speed and action without p*ssing anybody off. To be commended.

All imho of course :D

Keep them coming Dylan, and keep watching, people...

This is Dylan's impression of the rivers. He gets irritated by idiot mobos occasionally, as we all do, but that is a few minutes out of hours of film. I don't recall that he implied that all mobos were like that!

The East Coast is a tolerent and magical place. We all (mobos and raggies and dinghy sailors and jetskiers and canoeists and rowers and windsurfers and kite-surfers and fishermen and ...) get irritated by each other from time to time, but when the moment passes, we get back to giving a cheery wave and letting them all enjoy themselves as they wish. Dylan shows that well in his films - the irritation soon passes and he's back to enjoying the sailing and watching the other river users.

Chill out, guys, and enjoy your boating and (if you want to) Dylan's films to remind you what it's like when you are stuck at home.

I for one have watched all of the videos and have enjoyed them all.
Dylen, you do get a bit carried away with the MOBO twits.
I can fully understand you getting like this at the time.
I get this feeling quite often when they come roaring though our moorings at Ramsholt.

If you are intending to go as far as possible up all the U.K. rivers you will be spending a lot of time on the fens.
Bedford is not a bad place to visit.:)
It is only 4 days from Kings Lynn if you push on.
If you come up to Cambridge do look out for the rowing 8s, they hog the river and travel at about 20mph.
Their wash is hardly noticeable though.

judgements

Dylan, to be fair, I don't have time at the moment to watch all of the films, but then others are very much the same, so tend to do as I have and formed an opinion on one. A bit unfair I grant you, but I'm afraid that can be all it takes sometimes
I don't do arguments these days, just trying to be helpful, so hope I haven't caused any offence

So your original posting, comments and judgement of my work was based on watching just the one film with the mobo section in.

But I value your opinions just the same.

Dylan

Hear, Hear.

Delightful video essays - nothing wrong with a bit of opinion I say.

Keep up the good work :)

I enjoyed the film too and would find the attempts to intimidate you amusing if they weren't unsettling as well. If some owners of big fast boats are unaware of the antagonism they are capable of causing in confined waters then an honest rant from a gentle soul is all to the good.

Part of the contrast between the quiet upper reaches of the Crouch and the foggy Roach is emphasised by your comments. I've watched a lot of your videos and find them enchanting and your point about getting further up the quieter end of rivers with your draft which is probably half mine are well made and caused me no offence.

I think the point about the visual and auditory noise in the water skiing area of the Crouch is well made and adds to the video.

I would point out that it is not the first time you have made comments about the effect of motor boats on your enjoyment of a quiet river. The Walton backwaters spring to mind.

It is a pity that Sixpence finds your comments are as annoying as you find motor boats and expresses similar feelings about you as you do about motor boats. Unfortunately while he has the luxury of not watching your videos again, we can't ignore the motor boats in the same way.

Keep up the good work and the delightful commentary.

Ditto from me too.

BTW - happy though I am to see my thread a bit hi-jacked :D I thought I'd round up by reporting that we went down river on Saturday on another perfect day. Left Bridgemarsh at 9.10 with a full crew (4 adults and 1 child),enough food to last until Norway and one gift bottle of rum. Left it a bit late due to waiting for a friend to arrive and we touched the mud leaving the marina :o but managed to churn through and once we were out it was wonderful. Gentle breezes and sun shining all day. One of my guests was a complete novice, but the river is lovely and wide for practicing (and almost empty of other boats) and she took to the helm as a natural. She found the concept of tacking a bit tricky and we passed one fishing boat at anchor FOUR times until she got the idea. Anyway, you'll be glad to hear that I didn't nearly smash into anything! However, I did have a small engine problem coming back and we couldn't put the engine on until the very last minute (sorry Ali - I think we may have got in your way as you were coming out), but found a very helpful neighbour who gave us the answer once we were safely berthed.

Everyday, something new to learn...

Lisa,

We were a bit concerned that you'd left it too late - glad to hear that you just left some grooves in the mud! No, you didn't get in our way - sorry we didn't help - we had no idea that you needed it! Saturday was lovely, but we had work to do. We had a lovely sail on Sunday, only one other sail seen in the distance and a few mobos. See you next weekend, maybe.

Ali

Twassocks

Dylan knows I am a big fan already and if his films had no commentaries they would be much less interesting - if only because he tells us where he is. I don't think, if you watch all his videos, that he is anti power boats. His appreciation of working motor boats in particular is evident.

Like Sixpence I enjoy getting on the water and am not too choosy about the vessel I do it on. But I value sailing for the peace and quiet and like nothing more than turning my stinky engine off. Clearly the young guy who has a sports boat at Burnham with half a dozen speakers attached round a goalpost on the stern is not there for the peace and quiet, and, yes, I do resent the disturbance. Likewise I have said a few words about those who seem unaware that the wash they create through the Burnham moorings may be having a drastic effect on those of us just pouring a cup of tea down below.

There is live and let live and there is consideration for other users of the rivers. More of the latter will certainly encourage more of the former.

And finally I have noticed that the great majority of motor boat skippers on the Crouch and Roach are aware of the effect of their wash on a sailing boat and slow down when passing. For my part I always thank them for their consideration. Even though they probably can't hear me I hope they can see my wave.

Michael

ps Twassocks are nothing new. See Ransome's Coot Club and the Hullabaloos!

Have now watched Dylans cracking fims but

Whilst the quality of the filming and commentary is very good and entertaining the mobo comments are ill considered and crass.I would not be very happy myself if mobos acted like that as close to my boat and would have thought the people themselves idiots and not alienate a whole group of people for the behaviour of a few
We have all come across people that we consider to be foolish or rude and I refuse to generalise as I feel I would lose the opportunity to meet some: raggies/ribowners/narrowboaters/ jetskiers and have a great time(delete where applicable)Dylan I still have a beer with you as long as its your round :)
However this"bit me/bite me" attitude I believe has no place in the ECF sanctum and In the words of Duncan Ballantyne"Thats me Oot" (only this thread :))
cheers Joe

Well rather than Dylan sensoring his video commentary, the challenge is to sway his opinion on MOBO's. :)

Personally I love a whole host of motorboats (having owned a few) and to be honest, if I was to consider a liveaboard right now and wasn't planning on travelling too far, i'd snap up a nice flybridge cruiser or trawler yacht.

But perhaps a part of it is like the cyclist / car thing. When i'm in the car, I find cyclists a right pain in the backside. When i'm cycling or jogging, cars are smelly, rude, noisy contraptions. :D

Dylan

Love the videos, and everyone I know does as well, as much for the commentry as for the video. I think a programme like countryfile should show one a week!

Ian

Hear Hear.

I have enjoyed every one of Dylans Videos, including his occasional rants. Those that I've disagreed with I've taken on board as someone else's opinion. What I've enjoyed about this thread drift is the ECF version of a 'flaming' row. In other words, people having an open discussion from different viewpoints without the insults.
Dave, I think I'm about to revert to my usual rude self now:D

Never known you to be rude yet
Must admit, having watched more of the videos, Dylan, it's obvious you don't particularly like mobo's, but not painfully so. So I'll withdraw my previous statement, and will watch them. As Joe says, it's not really what we like to hear around here, and personally I would find it better without the comments, but they are few and far between. Might be better if you could make it clear it's the idiots you find annoying, that way the mobo community in general would probably agree with you, but there aren't really enough anti mobo comments to make it as painful to watch as I first thought.
Live and let live seems to be the ECF way
But try to imagine how annoying it would be in a mobo, when someone is tacking from one side of the river to the other, against wind and tide, when all you want to do is motor past him
Still, at least we can have a civilised argument in here about it, without anyone being rude, apart from Ian that is :D

When I was twelve years old we hired a Broads cruiser which was 36ft long. I remember steering it and it was a matter of pride to steer this boat which would do no more than 4knots past tacking yachts without interfering with them. Nowhere in the northern Broads is as wide as the Crouch, so I simply fail to see what the problem is with tacking yachts that motor-boaters keep referring to.

Comment made with tongue firmly in cheek I can assure you
Having spent more time at the tiller of a fifty foot narrow boat on the non tidal Nene and Grand Union, than on tidal waters, I've never had any problem dodging other boats or bank side maggot drowners, it's part of the fun of boating.
