AHH I wonder \"where are they now\"

We sail with the VHF on all the time and often get to our destination and discover hours later that it is still on. So from that you can tell that we don't sail on the south coast of Britain anymore.

Motoring back up the Corfu channel in a flat calm, 24C under a blue sky on Thursday morning and having two hours of silence broken by some Brits obviously a long way from home we were prompted to try to recall all those "social" calls that used to regularly ring in our ears in over 25 years of Ch16 monitoring in and around the Solent up to 2001.

Favourites were:-

"Not Yet, Not Yet this is Roman Ways, Roman Ways"

and

"Tanglin calling Tormenteil; Tanglin calling Tormenteil"

Where are they now?

Apart from "Sunsail six this is Sunsail thirty-two" are there any regulars that sick in anyone else's memory?

tee hee, sonsy lass this is sula every 10 minutes /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I watched bagpus and her friend pull off the wall from Porthmadog together, they were on the radio immediately and chatting all the way out of the estuary. They are pretty funny that they could have used a loud hailer or tins on strings most weekends but still always call on 16. Never managed to suss out a predetermined working channel yet..

Overheard near Poole one Sunday morning - and I'm risking the wrath of OfCom here.....

A woman's voice, clearly uncertain -

"Vasectomy, Vasectomy, Vasectomy.

This is Colostomy Bag, Colostomy Bag, Colostomy Bag.

I spell - Charlie, Oscar, Lima, Oscar, Sierra, Tango, Oscar, Mike, Yankee. Break. Bravo, Alpha, Golf.

Colostomy Bag.

Radio check. Over."

There was silence. For about a minute. Then she started again........

Re: AHH I wonder \"where are they now\"

"Ferst Time Ferst Time Ferst Time " (Scouse accent)
"Dis is Vergin Voyager Vergin Voyager Vergin Voyager are yer there like"!

I was sorely tempted to reply "What,s your position go to channel six nine!"
Off Anglesey not too many Moons ago!

Re: AHH I wonder \"where are they now\"

Is there still a boat around Anglesey which appears to be called 'sewage' ?

(I believe actually 'sea witch')

Re: AHH I wonder \"where are they now\"

In the days when we had a Navy there was a frigate based in Devonport called Sirius and at the same time there was a Moody 30 in Dartmouth called Don't Panic.
"Don't Panic, this is Sirius" comes to mind.

Then.....

there was the shipping company "Titus" who had four ships Titus Venus, Titus Mars, Titus Saturn and Titus Jupiter.

One evening I nearly choked on my scotch (when securely tied up in Port Hamble) to hear the newest addition to the fleet calling Southampton Pilots as he approached the narrowing North Channel:-

"Southampton Pilots this is Titus Uranus"

Re: Then.....

Think you're referring to Titan Shipping Co

Re: AHH I wonder \"where are they now\"

I reckon it's apocryphal, but one of the Mobo mags once reported a call from a boat called "Arm and a Leg".

"Solent Coastguard, Solent Coastguard, this is Arm and a Leg, over............"
