HI, i have been trying to get hold of 9 piston rings for my older 1987 yam 85hp 2 stroke.

The markings on the engine are:
H - 1987
the tilt trim mech is has written 688 then 5R-0417? It does have 350697 on the core plug (serial number)
There is a small stamp which probably means nothing, but it has 02 & 76 on
My pistons have 3 rings on which stopped apparently in 1988, where they went to 2 rings

I've tried part numbers 688-11610 piston rings & also Pt no 688-11603 which are both for the 75, 85, 90 yam after 1988. However the piston rings are to wide & as a result stick out from my piston and wont slide into the Bore. Looking at the old rings they are only 2.5mm wide and the new ones are nearer 3mm.

I cant see any references to the part number i require on the net anywhere & only ONE person has come back to me from a yamaha specialist in the UK, she would not give me the part number but said it was £170 for just 3 rings. Crazy!!!

I guess I have Three questions.

1. does any one have old stock of 6 to 9 piston rings they could sell me?
2. Does anyone know the correct part number so i can search them up?
3. can i use replacement pistons & rings for a newer 85/90 yamaha which only has 2 rings per piston. the replacements on ebay are still expensive at £170 but at least i can get the engine built and running.

any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated

Could be a Mariner power-head. Yamaha and Mariner shared a factory in Belgium and there are many crossover parts.

Go on the Mercury website Parts Catalogue and see if any numbers look familiar.
