Aft or centre main

I’m restoring a 1970s Lune Longboat, the predecessor of the Lune Whammel.
I’m pretty much working from scratch, so trying to decide if I should go for an aft or centre mainsheet. It’s the first non dinghy I’ve owned, so not sure what the pros and cons of mainsheet location are. I’m planning for it to be a family cruising boat.

Any opinions or advice out there?

A centre main sheet with a traveler on a track across the full width of the cockpit gives you much more control of the sail shape.

For a family cruising boat however it is real pain and even dangerous

My old Lune Whammel had the sheet standing end mounted at the end of the boom. From there, it ran down to a horse across the top of the transom ( mine was galvanised, earlier ones were a rope strop) then back up to the end of the boom (2:1 advantage tackle) then forward along the boom to a block at about the mid point so that it could be easily controlled from the centre thwart.
