Has anybody seen an affordable marine engine scan tool on the market? I know for automotive applications you can buy them pretty cheap. It seems like the ones for boats are really expensive. Too bad we dont all live in the same area, we could go in partnership on a nice scan tool to share.

I have a 1996 PCM 5.7L TBI.

If, you’re talking about scanning for error codes and other diagnostic info then it’s not so much the tool but the engine itself that dictates what you can do. Modern car engines are full of electronic sensors and solid state control devices which report states and errors. A 1996 marine diesel engine? Not so much.

That's a GMC/Chevy engine, the PCM stores fault codes and should be readable with a suitable OB2-2 code reader. I'd suggest researching exactly which truck based engine you have and look into a cheap OBD-2 code reader.

Should be OBD2 readouts, for which scanner and software is readily available. OE Scanners cost a fortune for any vehicle. If its not OBD or earlier automotive standard, the deep pockets are required! OBD only came in to general use around 20 years ago so anything older may be problematic. Google is your friend trying to ID an early EMU reader.
