several months ago bought a Seamaster captain with a Perkins 4108 and Enfield leg as a project on a drunken deal. Been slowly getting it up to scratch. But got to a point where I know its not going to sea any time soon. Mainly because the Enfield drive has decided to seize on me at the top-and unseizing it has become a chore to remove it and still haven't quite got there. The seizing is likely to do with the water that entered the filler hole where the plug had gone missing during the process of getting the boat up the slipway.
Meanwhile the Perkins is doing its common trick of not starting for anything-very disheartening to have both these go wrong at the same time although I've never had the engine running the leg did work initially as propeller would rotate in gear if I turned the crankshaft bolt on the engine. I worked out it was definitely leg after starter wouldn't turn at first then removing the coupling between engine and leg allowed engine to be turned.
As i said these are both disheartening things to not work on a boat. So the point I'm getting at is do I sell the engine and leg as spares and get an outboard with the money made or finish painting sell boat start looking for another one that works??
ps I'm now on a shoestring budget :(

Unless you can buy another Enfield Leg, I would do a Compression Test on the engine and if good have injectors serviced, new glow plugs and starting properly and advertise the boat with a good engine but leg needs repair.

I believe parts for the Enfield legs are like rocking horse manure. You might be better looking for a salvageable Merc (Isuzu) 1.7 tdi plus Alfa Gen 2 leg.

Both good points. I have an offer of a ford 1.8 diesel coming up but compatibility was always an issue. like the Isuzu idea although as i say my budget has kinda knocked back ideas like that. Is that 1.7 tdi basically a marinised vauxhall cavalier diesel engine?? like that engine too.
plus kind of wanted to go with a no-electronics engine if i could
there is a enfield leg for sale for 1200 reconditioned but still outta reach unless a trade in likely-its a private sale though.

A friend has Perkins engines. The parts for a top end rebuild were recently very cheap from agricultural Perkins main dealer. Pattern parts but they seem fine. The valves were replaced which has much improved starting.

Have enquired into Chertsey marine thanks Wavey. And definitely considering top end rebuild maybe even get a full rebuild kit if need be. At the moment i have left the injectors at my local place for nozzle replacement-i dont have a vice or any decent tools or i could do this myself I've read. oh and PCUK i have a pdf of both perkins and enfield leg manuals-its getting my brain back into the right gear for dismantling an engine if need be

Right good news is, had new nozzles put in injectors and once got through the bleeding saga with the help of my electric pump the old Perkins bursts into life. Of course it filled the cabin up with smoke as the pipe had split but after fixing that it fired up again.
I have also today managed to get the drive off the transom and onto the boat-big bonus, so that will come home for an inspection at some point to see if it can be unseized or if need a new one

Thanks aquapower, r found them quite stocked well in this stuff. Will get injector nozzles ordered.
Been left red faced here. Engine now runs and took drive off only to discover the drive is free. It must be the bearings in the transom seized can't believe my luck. Now to clean and paint the drive

Thanks for help all. Glad both leg and engine work properly turns out a crown-wheel boat had fell out and jammed in the transom stopping it turning. just go to hammer pin back in check it rotates independently and can all go back after the leg is repainted, a new prop fitted and new anodes fitted.
