Hello and greetings from Sweden!

My brother recently drove our families boat into a rock and caused some sort of damage.

Apart from scraping the propeller the engine now vibrates violently while running. At first we thought the propeller axel might became "offset" or something like that but after some examination I think that its the locking mechanism that locks the engine in position that has been damaged.
When locking the engine in position there is a glitch of maybe 1 cm (2/5") where I guess it should be completely fixed.

To help display the problems I made a small video on youtube, sorry for mixing English and Swedish and generally low quality, I'm not in the moviemaking business.
VIDEO
In the beginning I show the propeller and in the middle I show the glitch of the locking mechanism.

My question is of course; how do I fix this? which parts are most likely to be damaged?

I will most likely need professional help to replace the parts any way but I am still interested in knowing what needs to be done.

All help is welcomed and very much appreciated!

Thank you!
// Erik, Sweden

Get a new or at least known good propeller for testing to rule out the damaged prop. If buying new, do not get tempted by any composite (plastic) prop, especially with adjustable pitch. If the prop performed well (and reached the recommended rpm range at wot), just get one with the same dimensions (stamped into the hub).

No obvious problem in the prop shaft, as you'd expect the prop is designed to break before the more expensive parts inside the the leg.

The tilt lock isn't an issue - should disengage when in forward to allow the engine to tilt if hitting something. When running the prop thrust will keep it firmly against the bracket.

+1 to all this
first buy a good new prop

TBH I hadn't watched the vid but now I have I would not be too quick to dismiss it. I once had a 10hp with a vibration and although it seemed to spin true to the naked eye, the shaft had a very small bend that once straightened cured the problem.

I do agree though that the first thing to do is get a new prop.

Hilsen Steve

That's easy for you to say :)

Multi language thread?

Erik, din motor ser OK ud, men få fat i en ny propel før du prøver noget andet. De andre detaljer vil vise sig derefter.

To begin, thank you very much, tusen takk and tusind tak!

I will buy a new prop ASAP and try again, it also occured to me that I should of course have filmed the engine while running, so if the prop doesn't solve it I'll make a new video.

I also found out that when my brother hit the rock he kind of panic and hit reverse to not hit any other rocks but at the same time he managed to reverse back over the same rock. Does the engine take more/other kind of damage from hitting a rock while reversing?

Once again thank you very much for the replies! I'll get back with an update!

you could send the prop to steel developments for a revamp as it has many lumps and chips and they sell props too. The shaft could also be checked if you have a dial test indicator to test it for being bent may even have a stainless one too . The skeg on the outboard seems undamaged
www.steeldevelopments.net

Probably better to find a more local equivalent!
