Advice required

Hi all, new to this forum so im most proberby posting in the wrong section but i'll ask anyway. Ive just upgraded from a searay 200 cuddy to a Sunseeker Monterey 27 its a bit of a project as shes in a bit of a mess, the gel & paint isnt a problem as thats what i do for a living, but both 5.7 mercruisers & alpha 1 outdrives are in bits, does anyone know how to tell if the engines are handed & if its just the outdrive or the engine that is rotational, also have no props so looking for advice on prop sizes.

Its usually the drives that are handed and one should have 'CR' counter rotation on it somewhere, the easiest way is to put both into forward gear looking at the shift necahnism on the engine and at the short cable going down to the drive, the normal rotation gear cable should push 'in' and the CR should pull out as effectively the CR leg runs in reverse when its in forward and you have a LH prop, but the bearings etc a different to cope with the loading.
At a rough guess a 17" or 19" pitch prop will be in the right area.

I think the easiest way to check whether or not the engines are handed (some mercuisers are) is to

1. Look on the starter motors, and see if they are labeled with a direction of rotation. If they differ, they are handed
OR
2. Rotate them on the starter if possible.

Also, have a look on the gear linkages. If they differ, then it might be the drive that are handed. Refer to spannerman's suggestions above.

Before you start putting them back together, check carefully for wear and corrosion. The is obviously a reason why they are in bits.

thanks for replies, i wasnt sure due to reading that some merc engines are handed & then read that the drives are also handed, confused me a little /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif, unfortunately havent got any starter motors with the engines so cant check that way, just big boxes of bits, i suppose the firing order would be different, if i build one up & check or maybe just look out for 1 complete counter rotation package.
