It is possible that next spring / summer that I may be invited to a function in either Sidmouth or Budleigh Salterton, seems sensible to take the boat or maybe not!!!

My boat is 38 ft draft of 6'3''.

Is there good holding ground in either Budleigh or Sidmouth?

If not is there anywhere on the Exe that is possible?
If on the Exe would need to get ashore to hire a car & allow the dog to stretch its legs...

can anyone with local knowledge share that knowledge with me?

thanks

Neither are recognised anchorages - even in day time. Sidmouth wd be OK in settled weather but a long drag ashore (shelves slowly).

Plenty of places on the Exe; you might find Torquay/Brixham easier if you want to step ashore although there is a harbour on the Exe on the east of the entrance which you'll need to book a spot at.

Doubtless Cornishman has more info.

LOOK OUT!!! Behind y.......! Five more hoots and you're history!

Lyme Bay is a bugger.

Bridport - possible but not nice and wrong end of the bay, and only a couple of afloat berths,
Lyme Regis - possible but you're a bit deep - maybe if you can dryout against the wall
Seaton - maybe, if you can take the ground next to the wall
Beer Roads - no, you wouldn't want to leave a boat at anchor there unattended if there was any chance the wind would go S of SW.
Sidmouth - you'd have to anchor off, and there's no shelter from any wind with S in it.

Exmouth or Torquay, for my money.

Torquay would be convenient for a hire car - Hertz are close to the marina. However Brixham on the Harbour Masters pontoon might by cheaper and more pleasant. There are regular ferries over to Torquay for about £4.

Thankyou all for the postings so far. Torquay or even Dartmouth are only 45 - 60 mins drive away according to :

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.theaa.com/travelwatch/planner_main.jsp>http://www.theaa.com/travelwatch/planner_main.jsp</A>

but the exmouth would be very close, could the marina take something of my size and draft?

There's visitors moorings on the Exe. You could moor up, get the water taxi ashore and get off to your booze up, sorry function, without any problem.

I think that there's alos a visitors mooring just outside the harbour at Lyme Regis which could be OK. But it is a bit exposed. You could phone them to check it out.

Yes Exmouth Docks (marina!) could take a boat of your size, suggest you phone ahhead to check on availability, 01395 269314. No facilities at the moment, not even power or toilets, but possibility they may be there next year.

There are a few visitors moorings on the Exe, the main problem is that the water taxi stops running relatively early in the evening so suggest you use your dinghy.

Would not recommend anchoring at either Budleigh or Sidmouth, both very exposed from East and South. Even Lyme Regis could be a problem for a boat of your draught, at low water springs there is only about a metre of water.

Exmouth to Budleigh by car only takes about 10 minutes, maybe double to Sidmouth, certainly much easier than driving from Brixham or Dartmouth.

If Exmouth is full/too expensive no visitor moorings available etc and you feel like some fun, then try Turf Locks on the Exeter Ship Canal. Cheap moorings, but does involve creeping up the river - access limited too. To make arrangements call Jack Knott (or better yet Margaret ) at the canal office to check possibilities. No cars allowed at Turf, nearest car park is 1/2 mile away, but ferry or dinghy can take you to Topsham, or bring bikes and ride up the tow path to Exeter (not a good idea at night when you have one or two too many!

Don't bother about the city basin - M5 motorway bridge with airdraft of 30 feet.. and horrible weed problems.

Have fun

rgds,

Nick
