Hi

I am about to sell my narrowboat for something bigger that goes further. Looking at maybe coverting a steel MFV or tug. Anyone have experiences to share - and or tips for finding this type of vessel?

Thanks in advance

often see these advertised in 'boats & planes for sale'

you get a lot for your money but maintenance costs could be huge.

we are trying to go into this with our eyes wide open - what hidden maintenance costs could there be?

Once you have done your initial conversion to a steel boat (including such things as shot blasting hull inner and outer, painting with a propriety brand steel protective paint system, insulation, etc) the maintenence is much the same as any other boat. A good strong hull though but sometimes heavy and slab sided. I "did up" a De Groot 40 ish, with twin Perkins 4108s installed(great boat for the canals of Europe with good accomodation)can be purchased in disrepair quite economically. A few people never finish their re fitting and get disillusioned. Keep trolling the Boats and Planes Mags and look on the web under Stevens, De-groot, etc

Your not talking hundreds to slip a large boat it can get very expensive, then the moorings costs because the bigger it is so the options re cheap moorings go out the window.
You proberly already know about looking after a narrow boat hull but with sea going stuff things are totally different .
In the end you get what you pay for .

ps I'll sell you my trawler which would take you any where in the world.
