SWMBO has three pairs of scissors (one big and two small) she wants to take to Ibiza. SWMBO only has hand luggage so she thought of posting them. The Post office said they could not be posted and would be thrown out. Is this correct?

Thanks for that info. It says "Bladed Articles including but not limited to, any knife (including a folding pocket knife), any knife blade, cutlery knife, scissors with scarp edges or points and sporting equipment with a blade."

I don't understand the reason for this. If SWMBO hands them over in the local Post Office, she will not have them again until she opens her letter box in Ibiza, and therefore she could not harm anybody

Maybe because whether sharp items can harm staff depends on how they have been wrapped. It's not like the usual function of wrapping which is to prevent staff harming articles - if that does not work it's your problem!

Oh weird. I read the sharp items bit which seems contradictory. Good old post office! They blatantly do allow it, otherwise how would people in this modern age buy scissors?

(including knives, kitchen utensils and gardening tools. Excludes blades – see Bladed Items)

  • International & UK - Allowed in the mail, see packaging guidelines below:
  • Sharp objects like knives*, kitchen utensils and gardening tools may only be posted if they are packaged appropriately so that they are no risk to employees, other postal items or recipients. *Excludes knives that are banned under UK laws - see Weapons.
  • Wrap heavy cardboard around sharp edges and points, strong enough to ensure that the contents do not pierce the outer packaging. Wrap each item with cushioning material. Place in a suitable outer container such as a padded envelope.
  • The sender's name and return address must be clearly visible on the outer packaging
