As always, when in doubt I turn to this forum for help!!

I was out cruising on Saturday on the Thames with the family when I felt a slight thud and the boat jerked, albeit minutely. I checked my depth and I was in 3 metres of water and I couldn't see any debris so I carried on. At the I put it down to the fact I had just rounded an small island and had changed directions from going down stream to back up the river so basically down to the current.

When I got back to my berth I noticed the rudder gauge was no longer working. The two could be can be coincidental of course.

So the reason for the post is for any advice. How does the rudder gauge work, is it based on a cable to the stern drives, electronic relay of some sort, or by magic? ?

If by cable, if it were to snap could that explain the thud I felt?

This happened on my t40.

On the leg there will be a cable ( like a kids bike brake cable) that will head off through the transom to a sender and then to The gauge.

In my case the cable had snapped which apparently is quite common on lifting the leg to beach mode. If you are lucky it had just fallen off the sensor end.

Volvo said it had to be lifted but aquatom did it in the water
