I use a Navman N60i with the speed camera database.........
Get the occasional false positive on camera locations, but strangely I prefer that...!!
Regular database update from website is easy.
It also tells me how to get to places, so I don't need to embarrass the whole of the male race by stopping to ask directions!!!!!

IMO the best SC GPS map is used by these guys.
http://www.cyclops-uk.com
Dont go for the garmin version as the SC map data is not as good as in the origional Cyclops.
Most maps in tom tom etc are not directional and alert you even if you are travelling in the wrong direction for the camera.
It also has mobile sites in theer and variable speed locations.
Road works cameras are ususlly on the database within 24 hours
I have had a cyclops now for two years and wouldnt be without it.

To everyone else " Dont speed is not an intelligent answer"

[/ QUOTE ]

It is an intelligent answer, just not the one you want.

OTOH, 'How can I break the law without getting caught?' might not be an intelligent question. There are several measuring systems that are impossible to detect, e.g. VASCAR and indeed being followed by an unmarked car. A little thought will reveal that the only way of making sure you don't get a speeding fine is to obey the limits.

I would agree if mobile speed traps were not hidden in the places where the limit is not obvious and the speed limit signs infrequent.

There are streches of road where the limit changes every few hundred yards for no obvious reason

The only way to be sure of not being trapped is only ever drive at 20mph or be a policeman.

Remove your rear license plate and leave it on the rear parcel shelf lying flat with some blobs of bluetack on the front.

If stopped by plod try claiming that it just fell of a few minutes ago and you had blu-tacked it to your rear screen "but it must be damp occifer".

If they don't believe you then pay a fine ( but no points ) for failing to display a number plate , though if you fought it in the courts you would probably get away with it. Still NO PENALTY POINTS though !!!

I have the original Road Angel, which is free to update for life (Or until it goes belly up and throws its diodes in)

When the new ban on 'radar' detectors (As in France) comes into force, I will have to make sure I throw away the laser detector that came with it. I have never used it as the laser beams are so tight now and the plods tend to aim for number plates, it is next to useless, especially as when the alarm goes off, you have already been 'done'.

I don't even have my road Angel on view, it sits in the rear passenger foot well and always picks up the sat signal and I can hear the warning beep. I have drug dealers tinted rear windows so that low life's can't see it either.

Radar and laser detectors are to be banned within months and drivers caught using the devices could face fines, penalty points and even have them confiscated.

According to the Department of Transport, "the starting point would be 3 penalty points and a £60 fine."

The gadgets are to be outlawed under provisions of the Road Safety Act 2006 - the same legislation which recently introduced new penalties for motorists using mobile phones. Satellite-based camera warning systems will remain legal.

and that's the only bit you have to note if you're using a Road Angel etc, it's only the much older 'radar detector' systems that will be illegal /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

this may be so with your older bit of kit, the more recent ones detect laser and radar, and suggest you 'check speed .... check speed .... check speed' in a loud and safe manner.

this occurs before the 'safety camera' operator gets you into photo range .......... needed for a compulsory donation.

while we are at it, what became of the legal appeal rejecting the requirement to incriminate oneself on a speeding ticket - anyone know ?

Talking to a gestapo plod last year and he was of the opinion that radars are rarely used now and that lasers are so accurate that there are no 'spurious' laser beams for detectors to pick up and once you do hear the alarm, the ticket is already in the post.

Perhaps a tame plod could confirm or refute.

Missed it- thank you.

I know what a corset feels like now, the breath is slowly being squeezed out of us until all resistance expires!!

Road Angel (Blackspot Interactive) have just responded as follows:-

Many thanks for the email.
RA Compact = simply remove the laser alert attachment and do not use it again = legal unit

RA plus = go into the alerts menu- scroll through until laser alert is displayed and change it to off position.= legal unit

It is only the laser alert that they are trying to make illegal not the whole unit.

I hope this puts your mind at rest, if you have any more concerns please do contact me again.
Kind Regards

Subject: Impending legislation?

I have two RA units
1. RA Compact with laser sensor
2. New RA with sensor incorporated

I have heard comment that new legislation is pending which will make one or perhaps both of my units illegal to use and subject to hefty fines

Can you tell me any more please?
