I am doing a delivery trip on Saturday week with a friend from Milford Haven to Waterford.

His pilot books are on his boat and I wonder if any one can give me any information about the passage from Dunmore East to Waterford.

How long is this trip and are there any decent anchorages? Is it feasible to punch the tide, with a 5 knots cruising/motoring speed.

LW at Dunsmore East is 11am which is when we plan to arrive. We are looking to get the bus from Waterford to Cork airport which takes 2 hours for a 9pm flight home.

Has anyone done this? Is this timing feasible

Thanks

Martin

I don't have my charts or pilot at home either, but from memoryof a trip last year;
Its about 5-8 miles and takes about 1 to 2 hours, the tides are not strong but a journey against the tide will take longer. The river is generally and is well buoyed, quite large ships use the channel.
There are several obvious places where you can anchor and dinghy ashore.
The tide near the pontoons at Waterford is quite strong.
I think your proposal is possible but you do not have much time in hand if problems arise.

The estuary and R Suir are very well buoyed all the way to Waterford.

Did this trip last July on way to Cork Week. You should have no problem with time as tide will be under you I guess.
Only problem we had was with salmon fisherman netting across a narrow bend - soon sorted out with helpful waving.
Only other problem was where channel divides after power station - our pilot was not too clear but fortunately a local boat was passing and we were able to follow him up to Waterford City where there are pontoons for local boats. You would need to check in advance if leaving a boat for some time. Shouldn't be a problem if you've a new crew joining and only overnight.
Seem to remember upriver trip taking about 2-2.5 hours and we were not rushing.
We did not stop to anchor but there seemed to be moorings in a few places and several spots that we could have stopped if needed.
Remember that some big ships & trawlers go up to Waterford and some parts of the estuary are very shallow but it is very well buoyed. Ensure your echo sounder is working and you should be ok unless like us you got thick fog for the downstream journey!
It looked worse on the chart than it was in practice!

Cheers

You're re-enacting the journey that Strongbow took 833 years ago when he took Waterford for the French !
