hi all, In 1982 my father, Stuart Cooke, completed a 28ft ocean going yacht with a junk rig and named her 'Zuleika Louise'. We sailed her down to Cornwall and sold her in 1987 - the new owners were taking her to Cumbia, I believe. I'd love to hear what happened to her and if she is still in the UK. Any advice on how to go about trying to trace a yacht would be much appreciated - we no longer have any paperwork on her.

Firstly, welcome to the forum - I hope you get as much fun, information and irritation out of it as the rest of us.

Now the good news - if you click <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.itu.int/cgi-bin/htsh/mars/ship_detail.sh?lng=en&1302898&ZULEIKA>here</A> you will see that your father's boat has a registered VHF/DSC in the UK.

The bad news is that you can't really trace her any further from here, but its a start...

Good luck

Thank you! This is great - lovely to know she is Zuleika - funny enough this was the name we originally wanted for her but were unable to register at the time because it was already in use, hence the addition of Louise.

Thanks for the welcome - great forum!

Zuleika Louise

What you have from bignick´s lead is that the yacht is British Registered, Part 1, the registration number is 700465 and the owner´s surname is Hooper.

What was the first Port of Registry ?

If for example is was Plymouth you will find ( at www.plymouth.gov.uk/content-1287 ) that the City of Plymouth has copies of all the old shipping records in its archives, including transfers as late as 1987.

That data (and original documents) is now at the Register of Shipping at Cardiff. If you ask them they will probably squeal about the data protection act and refuse to release any details.

If you attack it from the point of view of historical research and study the archives at the original port of registry you can get the same information but from a different source.

Ah, I see... good tip, thanks. She was first registered at Southampton and it looks from the website like they have some pretty comprehensive archives there.
