Advice on Menai launching

NE of Beaumaris will be choppy. It will calm SW. At gallows point there is a slipway that is tidal to the South of the spit that I believe belongs to ABC Marine. On the spit itself, all tides you can beach launch yourself (or at least you were able to as of a few years ago when I used to do so myself) It is over shingle though.

There is also a slip just north of Beaumaris at Friars Bay that is worth investigating. I've only fished there

and another in the south by Anglesey sea zoo over here

but I have launched from neither so check them out

There is nothing cheap about boating you have been away far too long!

Nearest from Bangor onto Strait is at Menai Bridge . I think its £17 per day launch.
You are aware of Dinas Yard at Port Dinorwic . You might also ask the marina for a price as they also do a full launching and secure car and trailer parking service for you.
Next nearest on mainland is Ty Calch which shortens the run out over the bar to Llanddwyn Island. They are south of Caernarfon and will also charge extra for launching and recovery and parking.

Angelsey day only visitor slipways are at Beaumaris, Traeth Bychan near Benllech, Rhosneigr and Treaddur Bay. Parking cars and trailers are not hassle or cash free.....There are others but usually access requires a key.

The Moel Y Don slipway is controlled by Plas Coch holiday homes.

You would be horrified by how much we get charged for harbour dues!

If you want any further local info PM me a phone number if you like.

Remember slack water at Menai Bridge is two hours before high water liverpool.

Tides are generally stronger south side of bridges.

Stay safe . We have had too many problems this year in this area!

Friars bay is very steep and soft mud at bottom usually posted and chain locked. I have used it to self lainch a 4m rib but with 4 x 4 many moons ago.
Never used the Sea Zoo access.
Most of the Forydd foreshore (near Ty Calch) has had boulders put on it to make it impossible!
Self launching off soft gravel beach at tip of Gallows is possible with care and a good 4x4.
I don't think ABC slip is full tidal probably 3hrs either side of HW.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but there is a slipway in Y Felinheli, between the sailing club and pub.
There is a space to leave your trailer [i'd lock it] and parking available along the drag.

I would assume this is free..

Google maps it!

OK thanks all for all the info.

I must admit that I seem to be out of touch with the ammount of 'dollar' (as my kids would say) for this. I do think its daft you have to register with Anglesey for West bank access and Gwynedd for East bank access - but I need to let it go and stop being such a grumnpy old man.

I googled mapped the slip at Y Felinheli - looks absolutely ideal.

I also have a big 4*4 so the gravel at the Gallows may be 'on'

I contacted Plas Menai who said they are no longer offering public slipway.

Also in case anyone is interested I called Anglesey council and they let slip that all of their enforcement officers apart from the permanent Menai one finish work for the year at the end of Sept so that is handy to know.

Cheers.

TSB240 - yes thanks I have the tidal flow charts for the straight and note that most refer to Liverpool - I will be quite careful to make sure exactly what I am getting myself into.

Given I am small I will be planning on no more than the 2/3 hoursover slack and slow water. It's also going to be neaps when I am there so that will take the sting out of it.

I will avoid anything more than a 1 or 2 knots of tide.

The best slipway on the Strait is at Menai Bridge
Low water Neaps the current is minimal (hour either side)
Low water neaps occur at 'sensible o clock' , fortnightly obviously
This time of year there is no 'Warden' monitoring the slip
Especially during the week
'Trailer Park' wont flood, stick the car there too
