I seem to have a problem with the domestic water system and could do with help please.

Until recently the pump only ran to pressurise the system but now it seems to only pump when a tap is open/shower is running. Can't see anything obviously wrong but it just isn't running as it has always done. The system is about 8 years old

sounds like the accumulator diaphragm has split.

Wot he said. Trying bleeding the schrader valve at the bottom of the accumulator; if water comes out then you need a new accumulator. If nothing comes out, trying pumping it up with a bicycle pump. If air comes out (unlikely, from your description) then something else is up.

Thanks for the advice guys - which makes a lot of sense.

Ancasta advise that it's a Jabsco Max 4 system - which means it's not ridiculous to replace but also there are service/repairs kits available

You must have a huge accumulator if you can shower without the pump starting! The way the system works now is correct. Tap on, pump starts. Tap off, pump stops. As said, your accumulator is the problem.
