I wish to fit a chart plotter, the space where I want to put it is restricted a Raymarine A50, 200x142x43 would fit. Can Forum Members please advise on the this chart plotter or any of it's competitors.

Is the Southampton Boat Show a competitive place to purchase a chart plotter.

Thank you.

I have the RC435, precursor to the A50. I would recommend any raymarine stuff (also have raymarine Ray54E DSC VHF and ST50 tridata) but you pay a price for this kit (literally..).

I haggled a price for mine at the earls court boat show, then phoned Lindon Lewis marine who I have a long standing relationship with and they agreed to match it. Definitely worth a shot at the shows.

Incidentally, with a previous Raymarine purchase: I bought an ex-demo plotter that turned out to have a duff pixel - I claimed under warranty and Raymarine replaced it with a brand new unit. No connection, just satisfied customer of both Raymarine and Lindon Lewis.

Garmin 450 or 550 will fit and have entire UK coastal waters pre-loaded (ie Bluecharts) so very good value considering you don't have to buy additional chart cards. IMHO, Garmin plotters are easier to use than Raymarine. BTW, I use both products so opinion is based on extensive use and experience of both, not irrational bias. :) Garmin 555 costs a little extra but is ultra bright for external use.

PS: Older generation Garmin 276C still available but you have to buy charts separately, but it is transportable and still very good small plotter.

Just bought the new A50D which comes with most of Europe already loaded and a depth sounder, This was because my wife who saw it in a brochure insisted we had it for the boat we just bought (oh all right dear if you insist!) also we had to have the Platinum 3D chart for our area!!
Well I didn't take much persuading so now its fitted, I am a Raymarine installer and can honestly say its brilliant, very quick and easy to use, has lots of extra features for add ons such as AIS and can drive an autopilot.
Screen is very clear in daylight and the charts are nicely presented, Have installed many other types also over the years but Raymarine remains my favourite, also excellent help when needed from my dealer.
Its all down to personal preference at the end of the day and budget of course, and getting the green light from SWMBO!
