I am about to lend my yacht to a relative of mine to sail in the Ionian whilst I sail hers in the UK. I believe that I need to give her written permission to do so with regard to the PP and also she needs to fill in a crew list. Does anyone know what wording the letter should contain, although I have never been asked if I own the vessel in the past (perhaps once from memory)?

Thanks

Spencer

I seem to remember that she will have to be named on SSR, insurance and depra papers. maybe wrong though.

Sorry Spencer I can't help you with that , but the reasons you may not been ask before if you was the owner is because the reg , ins are in your name and the passport will confirm you are who you are , all I can say is Greece is changing in quite a big way and I would suggest that you make sure the person have the right papers or you could be. Accused of charting the yacht , which off course your not .

Hopefully someone will come along soon and give you the info you need .

I wouldn't worry too much about this as a lot of the regulations are easing up. I assume it's a UK-flagged boat?

I'd just write a simple letter with your name, address, passport number, and maybe telephone number. Put details of the boat - name, make, registration no, length, and details of the person you have given permission to use it and the start and end date that they will be on board. Sign it. If you can get anyone official to witness your signature and put a stamp on that will help, but don't worry if you can't. If you're in Greece go to your local KEP office with the letter and your passport and they will stamp it for you.

The crew list just needs the boat details as before, and the full names, nationalities and passport numbers of everyone who will be on board. The skipper should be put at the top, under the boat details, and then the crew. The skipper should sign the crew list.

I'll see if I can find out any more and let you know but I think that should do it. Make sure you notify your insurance company as well.

That is what I did when I lent my boat to a mate. Letter authorising him as skipper, letter to insurance company and crew list. Don't know whether it was enough as he was never asked to produce papers.

Melody, thorough! Important to identify skipper's passport number. Good point about the KEP (a sort of citizens advice bureau, many small towns have them) but authentication of a signature rarely bothers anyone. I think you'll also find that for leisure craft, the only time you present a crew list is on first entry from a non-EU country.

In the new routines, once they're fully established, the only people who see your DEKPA will be port authorities to check LOA, which they'll use to calculate port dues, and PP once a year, or on random checks if/when "that tax" is implemented.

if you have a regular friend/relation who skippers the yacht:
Owners and Skippers

If someone other than a listed owner will regularly skipper your boat, list them as skipper on your DEKPA with the port police before the event (passport number and date of birth will be needed. Alternatively, list them as co-owners on your registration document. A final possibility is to ensure your skipper carries a letter of appointment from an owner; include the passport number of both owner and skipper.

That's a re-draft from my Greek Regs page, not yet published, since I'm waiting for niceties about revised charges to be confirmed.
