Advice for the Baltic - Kiel to Copenhagen

I would recommend you the following places - From your current position going north to Copenhagen:

Karrebæksminde - Nice little harbour with some restaurants and interesting nature not too far away. Take care in the inlet as the harbor entrance is a sharp left turn and you don't want to miss it, as currents can be very strong towards a very small bridge further in.
Vordingborg - Larger city with lots of shops not too far from the harbor. Interesting ruins just by the harbor with wildlife.
Stege - Also a larger place for Southern Denmark with some interesting museums, nature etc. Harbor markets on Tuesdays.
Dragør (north of Koege Bay / Køge Bugt) - Very old town by the harbor with good restaurants, cafe's etc.
I’ve been to the first three. I have a vague memory of a spectacular bit of artwork on the underside of the lifting bridge on the way into the first.
On the way to Copenhagen I have stopped at Rodvig a couple of times. I had an enjoyable walk to the notable cliffs nearby where I believe (don’t quote me) that the layer of iridium that marked the end of the dinosaurs was first found.

You can be quoted, because that's exactly right.

Did you go the marine engine museum in Rødvig?

Or the Cold War museum nearby, in an old bunker complex?

No, sadly, not. We were just there for one night. Actually, that’s a lie; we were there for two as I took a day out and caught a train to Copenhagen that we were going to miss and visited the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotec, which is on my all-time list of favourite museums/galleries.

Decided to take the easy route and had a fast sail down from Kemø to Klintholm Havn where we easily found a berth at 2pm. They have a special ‘offer’ of 3 nights for two so will depart Monday for Drager.

We want to have as much time as possible in Copenhagen to visit the museums/galleries (Folk Museum in Bruge and Rijks museum Amsterdam are highlights of our city stops on this cruise). Do you have a best museum/gallery recommendation for Copenhagen or Gothenburg (next cultural stop)

Gothenburg: the City Museum. Takes you through the ages from Vikings to development of the planned city to modern day. Geology too.

Art museum we enjoyed; a room of over a hundred self portraits plus the painting of the Swedish king being transported home after he stupidly got was killed at Halden.

Take a bus, or even cycle as we once did, to the Mons Klint exhibition. It’s a lovely site and a walk down to the shore is lovely, though the walk back up may be less so for some.

Copenhagen. I have mentioned the wonderful Ny Carlesberg Glyptotek. Mostly antiquities, some brilliant, and also an eclectic collection of 19thC French sculpture and some very decent art. Lovely building and nice cafe. The rest of the city I don’t remember well, though there are fun sculptures by a Colombian artist around the streets. Beware of mermaids. The Tivoli gardens are amusing, and the nearby Apollo brewery good fun.

Gothenburg, whose occupants can’t even pronounce the name properly, I have only mooched around. We did visit the museum 20+ yrs ago but I can’t say that I remember it. A lift to the top of the red and white stripy building is worth doing for the view. One caution. A Swedish mile is 10 kilometres.

Mons Klint seconded, and definitely worth the effort to go down to the beach and back up the stairs.
When in Copenhagen, the best way to get to know the city is on the bike. It is a true cyclist’s paradise. The Opera house and the whole island it is built on are recommended, as is the Royal Library

If interested in modern art, Louisiana should not be missed. Very nice setting on the Sound coast at Humlebaek, a bit south of Helsingoer. A small boat harbour at walking distance from the museum. Or go by train from Copenhagen or Helsingoer.

I don't know that one. The castle at Helsingor is worth a visit if passing, if not quite worth qoing going out of your way for. There are small museums and galleries all around but the modern art one I remember was on the east of Bornholm, which is still Denmark of course, even if I've cheated a little. Now I think of it, Malmo has a fine gallery of modern art. If in the Sound, Ven/Hven is well worth visiting and a bit like going back a century.

Yes, catching the train up to Louisiana tomorrow.👍

having left at 6:30am yesterday morning we made a very fast 47nm passage to get into Dragør old harbour for 2pm and an excellent marina spot. Lovely views across to the bridge from the old fort. We are thinking of catching the train over to Malmo for the day later in the week 👍

We sailed under the bridge the day before it opened, when it was full of pedestrians. We used to stop at the Limnhamn at Malmo and catch a bus into town. Nearby Skanor is interesting in a way and has a notable fish restaurant.

p.s. I've just seen a hilarious FB post from 'Brilliant maps' showing which city each country is most ashamed of. For Britain it is Slough of course but for Sweden it is Malmo!
