Advice chart plotter software for ipad

Because the details are never hidden. There is to my mind no point in a chart which hides information when zoomed out. You may as well look at a blank piece of paper.

But I understand most people are happy to play zoom in zoom out all day.

They may not be hidden but they are certainly unreadable if too large or too small depending on magnification.
That doesn’t sway the argument for me.
BTW on my plotter I split the screen, a zoomed in and zoomed out version of the chart. I rarely have to zoom therefore.

I’ve tried avionics and I sailor, both work well.

What doesn’t is the iPad, well it did for a while. Untill the unstable voltage killed the charge port/board.

Over the years I’ve tried pc plotters, laptops even built my own it’s based computer and displays. If I was to change my current plotter, I’d go for another plotter, dedicated, built for the purpose.. ok not cheap, but will work.

I cant find any mention iNavx on here has nobody tried it I have been using it on my iPad it accepts AIS through wifi from my transponder it uses navionics charts in fact its all good, I have a power supply on deck so runs all day drawing far less than my C120 plotter. I also have Navionics plotter for iPad it is also excellent but until now couldnt accept AIS, I must try that upgrade now as I prefer the tida data on Navionics.

I tried iNavx on my iPad for a while. Compared with Navionics it has a lot of bells and whistles, but a steeper learning curve. The charts seem exactly the same. However, the price for chart updates and new regions was extremely expensive as compared with Navionics; and now Navionics has AIS.

I was no aware Navionics was cheaper than iNav x however I am now trying to get AIS on to my Navionics App on Ipad i have ais running on my inavx perfectly it was fiddly at first set up and so does Navionics I cannot get it to work yet but its early days. I have the wifi connected to the ipad ok i have tried several settings, I dont seem to have a device management setting, which google search says i need to access through. General then click on device management but I dont have management to click on. Any suggestion would be very much appreciated, especially from some one running Navionics Boating plotter on an elderly iPad 4 AIS working fine connected to WIFI router ipad connected to iPad working on inavx. Perhaps I should turn inavx off.

I just have to connect 5he IPad to what ever is sending out the AIS data, in my case the plotter that gets it from the AIS unit. Open the Navionics app and the AIS data just appears, both else needs to be done.

I do need to make sure that it is using the plotter WiFi not the boat WiFi though

If you haven't got a USB lead handy then understanding how to manage battery usage is important.

- lower screen brightness to usable limit
- toggle off Bluetooth off when not needed
- toggle off GPS when your passage planning and you don't need your position
- using in flight mode with no data as GPS still works this way with Navionics

Most of this depends on learning how to toggle things easily so it doesn't become a chore.

Or just do what I do and use an "Anker" battery pack thing and a short USB. Works a treat and has the equivalent of 4 full charges in it.

Try Boatie (low cost app) for tide data inc flows plus a whole lot more

I have been using the quark ais and gps to wifi. The ipad has no gps but it picks up the quark signal happily and Navionics is using it fine.

There is no AIS overlay so I only ee the boats and can highlight to get details but there's no cpa readout as yet as far as I can tell on Navionics so it's not the best AIS display. I am hoping that Navionics will update and upgrade the AIS to get some cpa details then it'll be great

Wrong about iPad = no GPS. The version with a sim card connectivity has GPS built in.

AIS is now available on Boating app. I have it on mine.

I have now got Boating app and AIS running ok but it's not as good as iNavx for me anyway. No CPA no predicted heading and the green boats are a bit large, but no doubt it will improve. I like the way iNavx repeats all my seatalk instruments across the top of the chart as well. But I prefer the tides etc on the boating app.

Why not use the navionics webapp for planning and then import the routes directly to your ipad?

I agree. Navionics AIS doesn't have CPA. The AIS integration in iNavx is better, but recently I tried Aqua Map and I like it a lot: CPA,TCPA,Anti collision, list of all targets and I can set a different color for a friend's vessel.
