hola everyone, i'm jon, and to be honest, im really new here n i do need some advice on starting sea career .. pls see how u can help ..

I'm currently still a deck cadet from a local maritime academy ... and i would like to know if there's any advice that anyone can give to people like me, what would that be ?? Many have told me that the best way to start a career would be to join an oil or LPG tanker, that accumulating container experience wouldnt be realli uselful anyway... some said that nowadays, captains wouldn't be able to earn much anyway .. and finally, who are the best paid people in this industry (erm excluding the ship owners ..) ??

tks ..

What I would say to you John is stick with it. Go as far as you can and get Class 1. If possible obtain extra qualifications upon the way.
Many doors will open to you once you have the experience & Certificates.
If you are sociable, quick to learn and can adapt then good salaries & conditions can be found in most large companies.
Once fully qualified Pilots earn good money with reasonable conditions.
However in my opinion the Super yacht skipper has it all ! (and you dont necessarily need a class 1)
Good luck !

Hi

assuming you are intending to get uk certification then advancement can be expected with most companies worldwide .
enhanced salaries are more often found in the specilisations, e.g. lng, chemical, offshore vessels, d.p. and to a lesser extent oil tankers........ with senior ranks in passenger vessels also attracting more lolly.
to advance through the industry it is necessary to get your certificates, best way to do this is join a company which has a training budget - e.g. royal fleet auxilary or maersk
or you can fund it yourself but it is very expensive .......
experience is necessary to get promoted, as well as the correct certification, so after about the 3rd mate / 2nd mate stage it will be necessary to choose what specialisation you will want to exploit and build up some serious sea time.

good luck /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
