Nice question! Theoretically, any calibrated chain can be used. However the usual advice is to take the gypsy off the windlass and take it with you, when buying the chain, just to be sure!
thanks for the prompt answer, i just needed to know before buying the winch as the chain prices vary from 75.00 localy to 150.00 mail order (30 meters) ,these are prices for callibrated chain but not make specific for the winch.
take the "wheel" off the windlass, and run the chain through it by hand before buying. a difference in pitch only becomes obvious after you have run quite a bit over the "wheel" (what is the proper name - i cant remember).
incidentally, i did quite well buying my chain via a lifting gear specialist that i found from the yellow pages - he had no idea of "marine prices" and the chain that arrived was certified as calibrated and came from the same british maker as the chain from the windlass dealer. 40m of 8mm hot dip galvanised calibrated was £90
I bought mine from a company called Bradney Chain & Eng. 01384 636233 for £2.10 per metre plus vat & carriage worked out at £186 for 60m. All the suppliers will ask you what make of winch you have. Most of the well known companies (Lewmar, Vetus, Simpson lawrence etc) use the same spec. DIN766 which for 8mm chain gives a link length of 40mm.
