Advertising Bumph in the RYA magazine today

I tipped it straight into the waste bin without looking at it, the magazine followed about ten minutes later after i read the one article of interest
That's about my pattern too. I usually read the letters page but everything else gets only a cursory glance as I riffle through all the achingly boring and irrelevant (to me) articles. To send mine they invoke an overseas rate, which is a waste of funds.

I'm intrigued by the term "straight into the waste bin" where many immediately consign the magazine; I presume this is merely figurative and really means that it joins the collection of waste paper for separate disposal ... or ???

Here in Switzerland, as in Germany, waste disposal has reached a demented level of obsessive separation, collection and self delivery to centres. Separate containers for every colour hue of glass, for example. Paper must be bound in certain sized stacks, etc., with the incentive to do so that it is free collection or deposit at the centre when normal household rubbish must be in offically marked plastic bags that are paid for. Dump an anonymous, non-official bag and a forensic team at the depot will open it and sift through every scrap of rubbish to try to ascertain the origin - a discarded envelope or letter, for example.

I despair of the mountain of direct mail rubbish I receive - a wasteful manifestation of modern society's marketing mentality.

Mine goes straight in the rubbish bin, where it is later processed by the "rubbish fairy" (who has other jobs such as "laundry fairy" and "food fairy").

I thought the RYA mag was quite interesting, and it has definitely saved me money, as until I read it I was unaware that RYA members currently get a 30% discount at IHG hotels (Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza etc.). I immediately benefited from this offer by booking a stay in a Holiday Inn for my next trip to Edinburgh. The trouble with membership benefits is knowing what you're entitled to...
