Looking around at the various AIS Transponders such as the advanSea AIS TR-200 (Manual available here) they all seem to have a built in GPS circuit that use an externally connected aerial.

The AIS datastream is then sent from this to the chartplotter and the plotter input configured as Receive Only at 38400 baud.

Manual for the Standard Horizon CP180/CP300 here.

My question is around the fact that the AIS transponder manuals appear to show them transmitting the $GPRMC (GPS position) sentence within the 38400 baud stream that is sent to the plotter.

Would my plotter be confused by this or does it just ignore those sentences when configured for AIS on the particular input pins?

(Theoretical question. Just want reassurance and I don't want to have issues after purchase).

Thanks in advance.

I have got a em-trak B100 http://www.em-trak.com/PRODUCTS/Class-B/Class-B.aspx
This can be connected to both NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 (I did that)
On this one you can chose if you want GPS output from the AIS transponder.
You need to connect a PC via USB to do the configuration.

Regarding your plotter check the documentation or contact the manufacturer.
On my Furuno I can select what GPS input to use.

The NMEA 0183 38400 baud port will only be used for AIS data (the other GPS is connected to another port)?

knuterikt.

Thank you - The em-trak was on my shortlist as well..

I was intrigued by the AIS output from these transponders since they do appear to incorporate the GPS data sentences in with the 38400 baud AIS data. Other people seem to have had OpenCPN receiving both AIS and GPS on the same wire..

Another check on the manuals shows that the advanSea manual has used the wrong screenshot but better news...

The Standard Horizon manual says that you can disable the internal GPS in the plotter!

If I could do that in the advanSea then I would have two choices of where to disable the GPS source. Thanks again!

and the plotter manual says that you can set a port to Rx AIS 38400 (and I already do for an AIS receiver on board)...

but that manual did not say what would happen if RMC sentences were received on that port as well.. ..

Will see what Standard Horizon say next week :)

Still looking through the Em-Trak 100 manual to see where you can turn off the output of GPS info onto the NMEA connection.

It looks like the Em-Trak and the advanSea 200 are the same - The manuals are the same word for word!

It is here http://support.em-trak.com/entries/21391211-b100-and-gps-inputs follow the link to get whole text:)
2 - If you are able to install the GPS antenna in a "High and Clear" location, but you dont want to pay to have another GPS antenna installed for other devices, it is possible to output GPS information from the B100 to other devices on its NMEA 0183/2000/USB connections. Once again, you need to use the ProAIS2 software to do this. If you've lost your CD containing the software or if you would prefer a downloadable version then please let us know and we'll send you the software via Dropbox.

Thanks again... I have checked the info on that Em-Trak support site and it does appear to show that GPS output can be turned on with the proAIS2 but doesn't go into the menu details.

I am hopefully assming the next model up will have the same feature.

SRT - They have the proAIS software manual online, but it's not v2 and doesn't show the setting for GPS output off/on.
