Admiralty \"Tough Charts\"

Hello
Are these any good? Saw them the other day and am thinking of getting the Solent folio. I wondered what they're like for writing/rubbing off, plotting etc.
One advantage is they're nice and compact (small boat)

Re: Admiralty \"Tough Charts\"

I used them last year, neat and tidy and easy to handle. They are not much good for route planning (too small) but are great as a back up. I used a large scale chart for planning. They are easy to write on with a soft pencil and comes off with a normal rubber.

On a small boat they work really well and I will buy this type if I need further cruising areas.

Don't you mean a small-scale chart?

Re: Admiralty \"Tough Charts\"

Great for instruction in the cockpit with new crew learning the basics of position, pilotage and chart reading. But no substitute for your passage planning when in unfamilar waters.

Re: Admiralty \"Tough Charts\"

Dont do it,
I bought one and very dissapointed with the lack of detail, the solent one doesnt even go up Portsmouth Harbour to Fareham or Port Solent, or up To Chichester, so at the point you really need the chart, you will be scrambling around trying to find your other charts. The plastic cover split the first time I used it, (didnt use it a second time)

Thanks
This would be our one and only folio. Sailing mainly in/from Chichester Harbour. Might look at the paper again!

What do you sail out of Chi?
I have some folded charts of the Solentwhich you could have if you PM me.

Ooh er. Well, our only charts on board at the moment are toughcharts Solent folio and I'm happy with them. Goes to show, I suppose, I find them easy to use and IMHO they are tough.

Re: Admiralty \"Tough Charts\"

If it's going to be your sole folio, then I suspect Chrissie has a point. You definitely sense a lack of detail on the tough charts. I haven't done a formal comparison with the paper leisure folio, though.

To some extent it may depend on whether you go very close inshore or not, in the way that a dedicated racer or creek crawler might. You might appreciate the extra detail then, otherwise it might not bother you either way.

Re: Admiralty \"Tough Charts\"

Bought a set in Jan and then found out the West Pole was being moved - they are a pig to amend.... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif However they are sturdy and ok for the basics whilst on the hoof. I still tend to use my old admiralty charts in the harbour as you have much more detail so I am not sure of their worth other than as an expensive luxury

Small scale, small detail
Large scale, large detail

Or so I was taught...

Re: Admiralty \"Tough Charts\"

They are wonderfully tough, the spiralbinding is a great idea, and the size and waterproofness make them ideal for using in the cockpit, All the reasons I was so keen to buy one in the first place, the only drawback is the detail, the Chichester chart only goes up to Rockwood marker and a tiny fraction of Pilsey Island. The Portsmouth Harbour one goes as far as Gosort Premierre Marina, As this type of portfolio is bought for people sailing in this area, its a bit of a dissapointment, and If the producers upgrade it to to usable one, I will be first in line to buy one.
