Dropped into the cafe at WPNSA today for a coffee and started leafing through Volume 3 of the above. The sections on ship handling, starting from explaining different hull/prop/rudder interactions, are a revelation in their clarity and although obviously aimed at big ships are surprisingly useful for yachts people. I would be tempted to buy one but the different editions have different chapter arrangements so can’t be sure of getting the bits I want

If you go to second hand book shops, especially those located in towns or cities that are ports you can find, sometimes, copies going dirt cheap. They have a use by date when the new editions come out. When you are searching look out for Admiralty Pilot books for the areas in which you sail. The details on anchorages and tidal races etc has not changed.

The Manuals of Seamanship and their Manuals of Navigation are very good sources of general information for anyone wanting a deeper understanding of the subjects.

They regularly appear on the well known auction site for pennies.
