I'm going to need to buy the folio for Falmouth to Teignmouth for next season. I'd like it now, but is it best to wait for the new version to come out in Feb so I have all of last year's updates on there?

I don't _really_ need it until April after all... but as I currently have no charts at all and need to plan a passage for early April 08.

Any thoughts?

JUst out of interest have you thought about passage planning on the computer. The Imray charts for various areas are about £55 new,but many chandlers(&boat show) have them for half price when they are one year old(Imray support these charts on disc for 2 yrs)I have the Southern North sea set which cover a huge area over to France,Belgium,Holland.

Most of your advance passage planning can be done quite effectively using your Reeds Almanac ( shows how long I've been doing this - it's called MacMillan/Reeds in polite circles! ) and a copy of the free NP109 NW Europe Standard Nautical Charts Catalogue - any year. This last is available from your local chart agent and/or chandler, and most boat shows. I use it for very basic passage planning and working out what charts are needed. This is its purpose. The warnings in the Almanac's Passage Notes sections are well worth browsing, as are the comments for each harbour, and I use a highlighter pen on the important bits.

I recommend preparing a passage plan ( courses, distances, turn points, hazards ) as if it would be used in thickish weather - i.e. giving all hazards that might not be seen ( Eddystone, Prawle and Start Points, Berry Head, etc ) a very good offing - and modifying that if the weather turns out to be more clement. It also includes a VIP 'where am I going to get into' bad-weather pilotage plan for my bolt-holes ( Plymouth? Salcombe? Brixham? Dartmouth? Portland....?). I work those on the basis that, if I follow one of those in bad weather, sea-sick and tired out, I will get into somewhere safe 'cos all the prior planning has been done when I was well up to it. I only need to follow my p/plan.....

Once the new folio arrives, it is a brief exercise to transfer your advance passage plan onto the new stuff, noting any necessary changes, and giving thought to any relevant NOTAMS, weather forecasts, critical tide heights and times ( Salcombe, Teignmouth ) and the inevitable changes to harbour comms frequencies.

What speed would I use for rough planning? In your Westerly thingy, about 5 knots/12 minutes per mile should work out close enough. Any faster than that, and you can enjoy the grin....

Enjoi!

I was caught out last year by a swindlery selling off it's old versions as the latest (at full price of course!)

So check what the latest version should be, especially before you enter a certain genie's cave. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Are all folios update each year? I was thinking about buying the East Coast ones.

They're not, unless there is a significant change. The East Coast ones had the "Sunk TSS Magic Roundabout" and were reissued in July. I bought a set and got the RYA Plotter free with it.. That may help as well.
