Got a new VHF but reading the manual I am still unclear. You adjust the squelch to the balance point between no white noise and white noise ...... If you have the noise the display shows "busy". Adjust a fraction and both the noise and the busy sign go off. Is that the optimum place for monitoring Vhf and transmitting? Yes I have done the course! But some time ago. Yes I have read the threads describing the point as a gate the strong sheep (messages) push open:).... Where does "busy" fit in? Do you want it just off or just on?

Thanks Richard.Makes sense. Does it make any difference between transmit and receive (I'm guessing transmission is not relevant to squelch).
Reason for asking is I've had antenna problems so suddenly showing a lot more interest in the display. Failed radio checks send you nuts.

The trouble with courses is that they don't teach you how to read the manuals ;)

At least the one I am reading says

"BUSY/TRANSMIT INDICATOR
➥ “BUSY” appears when receiving a signal or when the
squelch opens.
➥ “TX” appears while transmitting."

Manuals written by technical people are often challenging. Depends how your brain is wired. "Squelch opens" is a phrase of beauty! :)
My plan is to turn the squelch down, just past the point of no longer busy and hope for some sheep to open the gate. :).

Thats about right. The further you turn the squelch down the bigger the sheep that will be necessary to open the gate but you won't hear the lambs.
